Raise your hand if you agree: Winter seems to be unending! Okay, so I can’t see your hand, but if you’re anything like me it can be hard to drink enough water during the colder months. However, hydration is an essential part of staying healthy.
As a nutritionist, I recommend drinking at least half your body weight in water each day.
Why it’s so important to drink enough water
But first, let’s talk about why it’s so important to drink enough water. It seems like such an unimportant topic, but it’s actually vital for your health. Even the slightest dehydration can affect your mood and energy! I know I definitely don’t need another reason to feel tired this winter. Our bodies depend on water, every cell, organ, and tissue needs water to function properly.
Another common result of not drinking enough water: mistaking thirst for hunger. So the next time you’re feeling hungry, drink a glass of water first and see if it’s true hunger pangs or just your body saying it’s thirsty.
4 simple tips to help you drink more water each day
The last thing you need is a complicated hydration strategy with all that you have to accomplish each day. So I want to give you 4 simple ways you can get enough water each day.
1. Set a full glass of water or water bottle next to your bed so when you wake up it’s the first thing you grab.
I do this every single night. I fill up my water bottle (25 oz) and put it on my nightstand. When I wake up, it’s the first thing I grab and I drink it all when I wake up. This hydrates me after a night of now liquids, wakes me up, and sets the tone for the day because I got 25 ounces in the first 15 minutes of waking up.
2. Always bring a water bottle with you.
I carry my water bottle with me wherever I go so I can keep drinking water on the go.
This is important. If you don’t have a water bottle you like, get one ASAP! I love my Elemental water bottle. It doesn’t leak, has a straw, and keeps things cold. It’s very rare that you see me without a water bottle. Carrying one with me at all times keeps me hydrated throughout the day.
3. Add lemon or lime juice to your water for flavor.
If you think drinking plain water is boring, add some flavor. I love adding fresh lemon or lime slices to my water. In the cold winter months, I’ve been obsessed with drinking hot water with lemon. It’s so cozy and another way to get in water during my day.
4. Drink from a straw. I drink more if I do!
I don’t know what it is about drinking from a straw, but I drink way more water when I do.
