Relax, Mom! These outdoor yoga classes across the Des Moines metro (most of them are free!) will give you fresh air and help you get in touch with your mind, body, and spirit. Breathe in, breathe out, and maybe meet some new friends, too.

Recurring Outdoor Yoga

What: Des Moines Yoga in the Park

Where: Southeast lawn of Gray’s Lake Park, Des Moines

When: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Saturdays June 2 to September 29

Hosted by: Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health-Des Moines

Cost: Free

What to know: The classes, taught by volunteer instructors from around the Des Moines metro, are open for all skill levels, from the curious beginner to advanced yogi. Bring a mat or a towel (and some water!) and wear clothes you can move in. No registration is required.

What: Ankeny Yoga in the Park

Where: Wagner Park, Ankeny

What to know: Yoga in the Park is taught by volunteer instructors from various areas in the studios. It’s designed for improving community health, energy, and relaxation. Families and all levels welcome. Don’t forget your mat!

What: Yoga on the Lawn

Where: North lawn of West Des Moines City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines

When: 9 a.m.; Sundays June 3 to August 26

What to know: This free program is open to the community and all yoga abilities. Each week, a volunteer from a local studio will lead the group in a Sunday morning stretch. Ages six and older are welcome. Please bring a water bottle and yoga mat.

Where: Shattering Silence Sculpture south of the Capitol, 1111 E Court Ave, Des Moines

What to know: Park at the Judicial Branch building and walk past the Japanese bell. Bring your mat, a bottle of water, and a camera to capture the sunset views. Pay in advance or cash/credit on site.

Where: Hy-Vee 1725 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines

What to know: Classes are led by a certified yoga instructor. All experience levels welcome. Bring your own mat or towel.

What to know: Join Dogpatch Urban Gardens for a free-will donation class to celebrate their successful Kickstarter campaign. This class will be lead by Pop Up Yoga DSM co-founder, Emily Steele.

What to know: Meditation Around Town is a monthly meditation offered to the public. The meditations will be led by local people who enjoy quieting the mind and exploring the inner self. No meditation experience is necessary to participate in any of the meditations. Please bring a mat, chair, cushion, or towel to sit on. This event will be lead by Sandy Eimers.

Outdoor Yoga and Pilates Classes

What: Pilates at the Park

Where: Giovannetti Community Shelter, Urbandale

When: Tuesdays 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.; June 19 – July 24

Cost: $50

What to know: Pilates is similar to yoga, but often involves repetitions instead of static poses. All fitness levels are welcome. Bring a mat, towel, and water bottle to each class. Instructor: Alyssa DePhillips, DePhillips Health and Fitness LLC.

When: Mondays 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 21 – June 25; July 9 – July 30; Aug. 6 – Aug. 20

Cost: $24-48 (varies on length of class session)

What to know: The benefits of yoga are stronger muscular endurance, sharpened mental clarity, deeper flexibility, improved circulation and immunity, and a heightened sense of well-being. This class is for active individuals who are injury-free. Sessions last 3-6 weeks. Beth Damm is the instructor.
