neighborhood guide - west des moines

West Des Moines is located at the crossroads of Interstates 35 and 80. With easy access to I-235 and 80/35, its convenient location makes it a great location wherever you may work or play. From the charming Valley Junction to the bustling Jordan Creek area, there is always something to do! It is home to several public elementary schools as well as Stillwell Middle School, Valley High School, and Dowling Catholic High School.

What is your favorite part about raising kids there?

Several factors drew us to the West Des Moines area. Each individual neighborhood is super family friendly and close knit. We also knew the public schools are really good in this area, regardless of the area we chose to live in.

What makes West Des Moines family friendly?

Neighborhood parks within walking distance of our home and bike trails we can easily access from our neighborhood make West Des Moines a great place for families! Not to mention the Valley Community Center, Family Night at Valley West Mall, and the Valley Junction Farmer’s Market!

What events does West Des Moines have?

Every year West Des Moines holds several seasonal events including Jingle in the Junction, Easter egg hunts at local churches, and a Fourth of July parade.

Why would you recommend West Des Moines for other families?

While West Des Moines spans quite a large area, each individual neighborhood has its own feel and vibe, creating a close knit feel. We also love the amenities- we are smack dab between Valley Junction and Jordan Creek Mall with both offering plenty of options for restaurants, shopping, and exploring!

What makes your community unique?

The different neighborhoods that make up West Des Moines make it a very unique place. From idyllic Valley Junction where you can shop, eat, and play at the park and splash pad to the bustling Jordan Creek area- with the Container Store (where are my organizers at?!) and Trader Joe’s, a 10-minute drive can take you to two very, different family friendly places! It is also home to Raccoon River Park which boasts trails, a large park for all ages, and a beach!
