‘Tis the Season for Christmas Cookies!

The falling snow, twinkling lights, and status updates of friends strapping freshly-cut conifers to their cars on Facebook can only mean one thing – Christmas is just around the corner!

'Tis the Season for Christmas Cookies!

There’s no other season throughout the year that makes me feel as warm and fuzzy as Christmastime. For me it conjures up memories of furiously dancing to Manheim Steamroller with my little brother in our living room, sledding down the snow-covered neighborhood hill with my dad, plastering the Christmas tree with homemade ornaments with my mom, and baking cookies on the weekends as a family just because. One of my favorite cookie recipes we loved to make, that were reserved especially for the holidays, is Chocolate Crinkle Cookies.

'Tis the Season for Christmas Cookies!

Festive and decadent, with a powdery white coating and fudgy chocolate center, these cookies resemble chocolate snowballs and are totally irresistible.

'Tis the Season for Christmas Cookies!

Baking Christmas cookies is a holiday tradition at my house, and these simple cookies are perfect for jump starting one at yours. Mix together a few fridge and pantry staples including eggs, sugar, flour, and cocoa powder to form a dough, then chill before rolling into balls through a cloud of powdered sugar. Bake until the chocolate bursts through its sweet coating, then dig in.

For an extra decadent treat, enjoy my Chocolate Crinkle Cookies warm with a cup of hot cocoa. To share the joy, package in a clear bag and tie with a festive red string. Either way, from my family to yours, enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

Makes 18 cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

  1. In the bowl of a mixer (or in a medium-sized bowl) beat together cocoa, sugar, vanilla and vegetable oil. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until mixture is smooth. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Mix into wet ingredients in 3 batches, mixing until just combined in between each batch. Cover the dough and chill for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Scoop out 1 Tablespoon dough, roll it into a ball between your palms and roll in powdered sugar. Place on a non-stick sprayed, or parchment paper lined, baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes before removing to a cooling rack.
