Girl’s Night Out at The Escape Des Moines

The Escape Des Moines

Are you a thrill-seeker?

Do you love putting your mommy-brain to the test?

If you answered yes, then you are going to love the newest way to test your code-cracking skills. The Escape Des Moines recently opened their second location in the West Glen Town Center (formerly in the old Plato’s Closet). The owners have created two rooms (with more coming soon!) featuring intriguing scenarios that make you start thinking and working with your group in order to figure it all out before your time is up.

It’s a great activity for a team-building event, a girls night out, or a family outing if you have older kids (ages 8-14 must be with an adult). None of the rooms have a “horror” or “haunted” theme so you don’t have to worry about bad dreams or nightmares (or moms getting scared!).

A few of the contributors from Des Moines Moms Blog recently paid a visit to The Escape to check out the excitement!

Our Experience

From the moment we arrived, Jamie, a member of the staff there, was very friendly and helpful. We had lots of questions, and he was more than willing to tell us all about the business and how things worked.

Once everyone in our party arrived and signed the waivers, we were gathered into a viewing room to watch a quick video detailing what our mission would be while we were locked in our room. I was impressed with the quality of the video and the sense of excitement it created.

Then Jamie took us to our room, gave us another quick run-down of how the room was set up, and some final instructions. He left, and the clock started. Now it was up to us to solve the mystery in 60 minutes.

If you’ve never been to an “escape-type” experience before, we had to start looking for clues in the room. Once we cracked one code or clue, it led us to the next. I am not allowed to divulge what or how we solved these clues, but I will tell you it was a lot of fun working together to solve the case!

During the hour we had to “work,” we experienced surprises, confusion, and a sense of pride when we made it out with under two minutes to spare. Talk about getting your heart pumping! We were told some groups have even come as close as a few seconds left before “getting out” of the room, or sadly, some don’t make it out in time at all.

I know many of us there that night were talking about how our older kids would love to come back and try solving the other room in the near future. It was a great time had by all!

Jennifer Gordon George
Jennifer is a single mom of two boys. She does her best to get to places on time, despite being a chronically late person and the fact that neither she or her boys are morning people. She recently went back into the classroom after staying home for nine years to raise her kids, and she credits her sanity and success at this endeavor to the fact that she has incredibly supportive parents, family, and friends. She also has a network of single moms that truly “get it” and who encourage her on a daily basis. When she’s not hanging out with her kiddos, Jennifer enjoys writing at a coffee shop, trying new restaurants, or catching up with friends.
