Becoming a single mom can be one of the scariest things you can go through, but even in the midst of the chaos, there are people and places you can turn to in Des Moines.

If you are going through a divorce, I highly recommend DivorceCare. It is a faith-based group that works through a 13-week curriculum. It is led by a trained facilitator who helps guide participants through dealing with all the different emotions and things that may come up during the divorce process.

If you’ve experienced the death of a spouse, managing your grief while helping your children through their own grieving process can be enormously overwhelming. I have heard wonderful things about Amanda the Panda and would recommend taking advantage of the help they can provide.

We all need someone we can connect with, who understands things because they have gone through similar experiences. I have personally found that connection in my single moms group. If you are in the Des Moines area, you can find my group and other single moms groups to connect with through a non-profit organization called Single Parent Provision.

Single Parent Provision helps facilitate single moms groups and also provides several other services to single parents. Sometimes single parents just need a break, so once or twice a month, parents can leave their children in the best of hands while they run errands, enjoy a night out, or just take a nap.

Assistance for Single Moms

Many times, single moms are in need of legal or tax preparation services, but can’t afford them because of their already tight budget. If this is the case, Drake Legal Clinic offers law advice and aid at a free or reduced fee. VITA is a tax-preparation service available from United Way that is available on a sliding-scale fee.

When I was doing a quick search for additional resources in the Des Moines area, I came across a website called Single Mom Assistance. It includes a ton of additional services and forms for assistance that single moms may find themselves needing.

When it comes right down to it, single moms (read any mom) have a hard time reaching out for help. I know I let my pride get the best of me sometimes, but what I have learned over the years as a single mom is that this doesn’t have to be a lonely road. Reach out and take advantage of all there is for single mommas here in the Des Moines area. You won’t regret it.

Please share this with all the single moms in your life!

Jennifer Gordon George
Jennifer is a single mom of two boys. She does her best to get to places on time, despite being a chronically late person and the fact that neither she or her boys are morning people. She recently went back into the classroom after staying home for nine years to raise her kids, and she credits her sanity and success at this endeavor to the fact that she has incredibly supportive parents, family, and friends. She also has a network of single moms that truly “get it” and who encourage her on a daily basis. When she’s not hanging out with her kiddos, Jennifer enjoys writing at a coffee shop, trying new restaurants, or catching up with friends.
