I Quit Shaving

One of the things that I hate, hate, hate about being a woman is shaving my legs.

As women, there are so many things we have to do to simply “maintain” ourselves. This doesn’t even include going above and beyond with our beauty routines. Then, when we become moms, we try and find ways to cut back, to make things easier, to find “Mom Hacks” if you will.

This summer I was on a mission to find a way to eliminate shaving my legs.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the resulting silky smooth legs, but the time it takes in the shower hardly seems worth it. You’d think after almost three decades of practice, I’d no longer knick my legs to pieces. And yet, I do…and I even manage to snag my fingernails with the blade quite often, too. (Tell me I am not the only one!)

I definitely see the point in shaving during the summer months. No matter how much I’d like to say I could look past the societal norm, I find leg hair on women quite unsightly. I just do.

It’s just plain painful to have to shave in the winter when no one sees my legs anyway. Plus, once I get out of my nice warm shower and the goosebumps come, the hairs on my legs grow about 2mm anyway. So my time spent shaving was for naught.

So, what can be done?

While whining to a friend about this dilemma, she suggested giving waxing a try.

Hmmm. My whole legs? Sure, I’d give it a try!

While I was happy with the results, the process was not that pleasant, and it took almost three hours. In addition, the cost was not sustainable for my limited budget. I knew I could not keep that up. It did make me really happy that I didn’t have to shave for a whole month.

I knew with summer coming up, I wanted to find an easier way for me to keep my leg hair under control without the constant worry of daily shaving. I turned to the internet, of course. It turns out that electrolysis is also outside my budget. But, I could afford the best reviewed epilator on the market.

For those of you who don’t know what an epilator is, it’s an electric tweezing machine that plucks multiple hairs at a time.

I know what you’re thinking…ouch! However, it really is not what I would call painful at all. The plucking is a bit uncomfortable at first, but you quickly get used to it. I think nit’s actually quite satisfying plucking all the hair so quickly!

The best thing I have found since I quit shaving, is that when the hair does come back in, it doesn’t come back in like shaving, all stubbly and the same length. It has seemed to come in thinner and more sparse. I call that a win. Plus, I haven’t had to take a razor on any of my summer trips! A dream come true!

Although I have only given up shaving for a few months, I’m ecstatic about the low-maintenance way to keep my legs free from hair. I don’t think I will ever go back.

Has anyone else out there given up shaving?
