The Science Center of Iowa is offering a new program for families who want to help their kids get a head start on STEM learning.
Family STEM Institute classes are led by early childhood experts from the SCI Preschool. These educators understand children’s natural inclination to explore and are experts at informal learning. Classes focus on ways to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into your family’s daily lives – and have fun!
Throughout the evening, families will work and play together as they learn skills and techniques used by the SCI Preschool to encourage creativity and critical thinking. Breakout sessions for parents allow for hands-on coaching and a chance to explore questions about how to support your child’s development.
And of course, you’ll have a chance to visit SCI’s exhibits and see the world premiere traveling exhibit Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family.
The next class is “STEM in the Kitchen” on April 19th from 5:30-7:30 pm at SCI.
Learn how to turn your kitchen into a little laboratory, and discover how to use inquiry and investigation techniques to engage your child’s curiosity. You will learn to ask questions like:
- How do blenders (and other kitchen appliances) work?
- What is measurement and why is it important in a recipe?
- What happens when you mix ingredients? What tools can you use?
- And more!
Family STEM Institute classes are designed for parents with children ages 0-8. Registration for one adult and one child is $25 (or $15 for SCI members). Additional children adults are $10 each. Children under 3 are free, and childcare is available.
