Katie Spellman is the lovely lady behind the camera with Spellman Photography. She’s the one with the camera, on her knees, making funny mooing noises to elicit grins from your shy three year-old.
Katie is also the one responsible for capturing the memories from our two latest Des Moines Moms Blog events, Get Pampered and Get Crafty. Katie is skilled at preserving lasting memories from your baby’s first smile to that special multi-generational family photo.
The Spellman Photography Difference
Have you ever been a part of a family photo shoot where everyone is stressed out and nobody’s smiling because mom has threatened the pain of death if you wrinkle your shirt?
Katie knows the best pictures don’t come from stress, so that’s why she doesn’t enforce strict session time limits. Sometimes kids just need a little longer to warm up to the camera so she likes to take a relaxed approach to her sessions.
Yes, Katie will always take the “look at the camera and smile” photos because those are always the ones Grandma wants! But once the obligatory photos are complete, Katie loves to get those toothy, authentic smiles with her goofy antics. Katie’s always up for a good game of chase and catching those action shots that truly represent an active kiddo!

For seniors, Katie aims to find ways to include their passions and interests (sports, reading, music) into their sessions to fully represent their personality.
About Spellman Photography
Aaron, Katie’s husband, was the original Spellman of Spellman Photography. Aaron started the business after he graduated from Iowa State University, over 12 years ago. He has always had a passion for photography and an artistic eye. Katie joined the business as the original photo assistant/wife and was put in charge of labor like moving lights and hauling equipment. Then Katie was promoted from assistant to photographer as Aaron handed her a camera and told her to “Go take a few pictures, just for fun.”
Fast forward a few years when Katie quit her full-time corporate job so she could become the main photographer of Spellman Photography. Since then, Aaron has taken on more of a consultant role and focuses primarily on running their family farm. Although Katie was trained in both studio and on-location photography, she has become a devotee of natural light for her on-location family and senior sessions.
When Katie’s not editing or at a photoshoot, you can find her either shopping at Target with a Starbucks in hand or taking their chocolate lab, Penny, for a run.
