Does the thought of bringing your newborn baby home from the hospital seem overwhelming? It doesn’t have to be. Postpartum doulas, like Katie Nyberg, The Iowa Baby Lady, work with new moms and families to make the transition home smoother.

Katie has been honored to work with hundreds of new moms and families in Central Iowa since 2010 as a labor doula, postpartum doula, and teaching birth/new parent classes. Her mission is to serve Iowa families as they GROW their baby, BIRTH their baby, and CARE for their baby.

Research shows a better chance of positive outcomes for mom and baby when a doula is used for birth and/or postpartum. However, many families in our area aren’t aware of this type of support exists. Or they assume doulas only help families who are looking for “unmedicated” birth or more natural parenting styles. This is definitely not true! Doulas provide emotional, physical, and evidence-based/unbiased informational support to any family who is looking for extra help as they grow their family. Your goals are our goals!

Postpartum Doulas are very new to Central Iowa. Many families do not know there are professionals who will come to their home after baby arrives to take care of the new mom as she physically and emotionally recovers from birth. We also provide support to the baby, siblings, dad/partner and pets too. Katie also helps with baby laundry or meal prep.

Katie works with a lot of twins/multiples families in the Des Moines area. Her advanced training with twins and triplets allows her to help new moms and families figure out how to parent this unique type of blessing.

postpartum doula Iowa baby ladyMy identical twins are nine months now and I’ve found myself looking back on that hellacious time after we brought them home from the NICU. They were five pounds, ate every three hours, and needed me so much. I was lucky to get four hours of broken sleep in every 24. But I also remember the few hours a week Katie took over my kitchen. She made me chocolate chip pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches. She rocked my babies while I napped or showered, and she listened to me talk about all the things that come along with brand new babies.

Katie was an invaluable resource. She was a confidante, a chef, a counter-top organizer, a baby whisperer, and light in the darkness of a trying time. She looked at me and said, “You aren’t just tired, you’re exhausted. We have to find a way to change this.” She helped me cut pumps and learn to supplement. She cared for my babies, but more importantly, she cared for me. And it isn’t really until now, when they finally sleep through the night and I can look back, that I realize just how much I needed her.” — Stormy S., Des Moines, IA

Iowa Baby Ladies Team

As of November 1, Katie has an Iowa Baby Ladies Team providing Labor Doula Support for families in Des Moines. Expecting families interested in getting some added support for their pregnancy, labor, and birth, can select one of her professionally trained doulas to help them throughout their pregnancy and birth journey.

When Katie created The Iowa Baby Ladies Team, she knew it was very important to not only support the mother and family through the birth of their baby, but to provide continued care as well with postpartum doula care. Many new families aren’t sure what those first days are going to look like with a new baby, or a baby who also has older siblings at home.

Each Labor Doula family to also receive a Welcome Home Postpartum Doula Shift at no additional fee. By providing additional postpartum support, they hope to help all families transition to their “new normal” with confidence!
