Sometimes after I get the last of my three kids in bed, not necessarily sleeping, but IN bed, my husband and I look at each other with a knowing look—a look of excitement, full of possibility. It’s time for…
What should we do with this magical time that we are, after much hard work, kid-free but paying for neither a babysitter nor daycare costs?
We don’t dwell too long on this question. We promptly fire up the blender full of margarita mix and ice.
I’ll admit, the sound of the blender is a bit harsh in a house newly quiet with bedtime. But we all know they aren’t sleeping yet. My son yells from his downstairs bedroom at us because he is closest to our blender noise and therefore most annoyed by it all.
“MOOOOOMMM?! I hate that noise!!!!! Turn it off, Mom! I’m trying to sleeeep!” (He is most definitely not trying to sleep.)
Me hollering back over the blender’s sweet sweet song:
“We don’t say ‘hate,’ buddy. I love you. Go to sleep!”
And then I hand my hubs a glass full of margarita with a tired smile and we slump down on the couch. For this moment is ours.
When the rush of the day quiets for you, what do you do? What do you choose first? Sure, there’s time for some one-on-one boom chicka wow wow… but realistically, that’s not my very first thought. There’s a moms-after-dark time given to us that is full of possibility. What do you do with it? Do you pay bills, vacuum, dust, fold laundry, do dishes, mop floors, or shower for the first time in a few days? Do you slump into a pile of nothingness and fall into a deep and much needed sleep?
Do you jump back into your latest hobby? Do you knit hats like me? Do you read a book? Do you have time to read?! Do you shop online? Do you get on The Book (a.k.a. Facebook) and stalk people? Do you Pinterest and dream of DIY beauty?
Whatever it is mamas, that time is yours. Share it, rock it by yourself, get some much needed zzz’s, whatever your preference may be. After a hard days rockin’, you deserve an hour or two of doing what you want.
