Mercy Midwives Des MoinesHave you considered using a midwife?

According to the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), only 8.3 percent of births in the United States take place under the care of a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). This shows, that as a country, we have a lot of work to do! At Mercy Clinics Midwifery we believe every woman should have access to a midwife, and that is the reason we are here for you!

Mercy Clinics Midwifery started in May 2015, and it has evolved tremendously over the last few years. We now employ six certified nurse midwives on staff. As a practice, we all believe in the vision of the need to empower women and provide excellent prenatal and women’s health care. We support women throughout their lifespan!

Most of our patients see us for prenatal care and we are “with women” all through labor and delivery. This includes a planned C-section, an induction, or natural labor.

But, we do more than just pregnancy; we also see women for annual exams or any women’s health needs. As a practice we believe patient support is essential, so we take it very seriously to spend adequate amounts of time with each patient at their visit.

Mercy Clinics Midwifery is like a hidden gem.

Most of our patients come to us through word of mouth. Friends and family members pass our name along, and we love that! There is something so special about caring for women who now feel empowered to share their own experiences and journeys with one another.

The statistics of our practice show our patients are the top priority. Whether it is to spend time with them at a prenatal visit, to provide education, or to work through contractions with them in labor, ALL of it matters.

mercy midwife laborHere are a few stats you should consider regarding Mercy Clinics Midwifery:

  • Our cesarean rate is 7.25 percent (the United States has a current rate of 32 percent according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC)
  • Our epidural rate is 35.5 percent (the United States’ last recorded rate was 65 percent according to the CDC)
  • Our episiotomy rate is less than one percent (the United States has a rate of 65-95 percent according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists)

These numbers prove that our practice is not only evidence-based, but also believes in women and their abilities.

It is important to remember that no woman, no pregnancy, no birth, and no journey is ever the same. We are all unique beings with our own stories, and as a group of CNMs we understand that. We care for women who want minimal intervention and women who want a lot of intervention.

We are happy to offer natural labor support, free volunteer birth doulas, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV pain medication, or epidurals in labor. Most recently, our group began to offer trial of labor after cesarean/VBAC (TOLAC) for women who desire VBAC and meet our criteria. We also have an excellent group of OB/GYN physicians who collaborate with us 24/7 in the hospital if needed!

We encourage patients to be good consumers and “check out” our group to see if they feel like we are a good fit. That is why we offer a completely free, 15-minute “meet and greet” visit. Come see for yourself and take a little time to learn more about us and our lovely practice.

Our office is located at 330 Laurel Street, Suite 2300 in Des Moines. We feel strongly you will be happy you found us, and it would be our honor to care for you!

Lauren Bennett, MSN, ARNP, CNM, is a nurse midwife at Mercy Clinics Midwifery. To schedule an appointment with Lauren or another midwife, please call (515) 643-6869.
