Megan Reuther Des Moines MomDes Moines Moms Blog recognizes that moms wear a lot of hats. You are a mom, wife, friend, diaper changer, nose wiper, meal planner, lost toy finder, the list goes on and on!

This summer we are thrilled to feature some local moms who are thinking outside the box and making a difference in our community through the businesses they own, organizations they are involved with, and work they do.

Megan Reuther is a news anchor and reporter for WHOTV Channel 13 News in Des Moines. Megan enjoys reporting on issues relating to parenting. She and her husband have 3 kids.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family

I’m an Iowan by marriage and St. Louis native. My husband and I both work for Channel 13 News. I was the morning reporter when we started in 2007. He was a nightside photographer. We only saw each other for lunch and on weekends, but it worked well for raising little kids! We now have “normal” schedules and all three kids are in school. They’ll start 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades this fall. We love living in Altoona!

What do you consider the biggest challenge of motherhood to be? The biggest joy?

Now that our kids are older, the daily demands aren’t as challenging (there is light in the middle of the tunnel, new moms!) My biggest worry is following what they’re watching on YouTube and doing on apps. The biggest joy is seeing them grow into little people with their unique interests and personalities. Each child is so different.

megan reuther familyHow/when did you start in television news? What was your inspiration?

A reporter interviewed me about organ donation when I was in high school. I loved seeing how her job made a difference in people’s lives by sharing important messages. I went to the University of Missouri- Columbia’s Journalism School. I started reporting for the university-owned NBC affiliate my junior year of college and got my first job at KWWL in Waterloo. Now I anchor the Channel 13 News at Noon and report stories for the Channel 13 News at Five.

What’s your favorite part about your work?

I love meeting new people every day and learning something new. Just this last month I got to share a foster family’s story, learn how college friends have traveled with their growing families for 19 years, and so much more.

What’s the hardest part about your job?

The hardest part is sharing the bad news, especially when it involves children.

What is something you wish you had known when you started?

It gets easier!

What’s the last show you watched, thing you listened to, or book you read?

The Channel 13 News of course! The last book I read for fun was Margot Hunt’s Best Friends Forever. I’m looking forward to West Des Moines author Kimberly Stuart’s Heart Land to come out this summer.

Des Moines Favorites:

Favorite spot for a date night: We don’t have enough date nights to have a favorite, but my husband and I love to have lunch dates at Gateway Market.

Best place to take kids: Bike ride to Over the Top Ice Cream in Pleasant Hill

Favorite summer activity: Altoona Aquatics Center. I’ve entered the mom’s pool promised-land: sitting in a lounge chair with a good book.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Anywhere my family is.

Favorite instagram accounts? I love @dsmmomsblog for momisms, @erinkiernan13 for cute kids pics, @anniebrees for health inspiration, and @mirzakudic for fantastic photographs.

How/where do you relax? I love going for walks and taking pictures of flowers.
