Why We Love the Enrichment Therapy and Learning Center

Enrichment Therapy Services Des MoinesMy oldest child, Lucy, was a toddler when we learned she had some developmental delays. After evaluations with a variety of professionals, she received diagnoses of mixed expressive-receptive language disorder, sensory processing disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder. She began receiving speech, occupational, and behavioral therapies, and we saw a great deal of progress during her preschool years. This was encouraging!

It was clear, though, that academic learning would be a long-term challenge for Lucy.

I had always dreamed of homeschooling my kids. Even though Lucy’s needs were a bit daunting, my husband and I decided to give it a shot. We managed fairly well in the beginning. In order to teach my daughter well, though, I had to muster every ounce of creativity possible.

It was rewarding but exhausting. By the middle of her second-grade year, some drastic changes in our family’s life circumstances had zapped my energy and depleted my stores of creativity.  I became desperate for some new options for Lucy’s education. We were overwhelmed. We didn’t know how to find help.

Thankfully, Lucy’s behavioral therapist told us about the Enrichment Therapy and Learning Center, located in Urbandale.  When we learned about their Language Enrichment Academic program (LEAP) we thought it was too good to be true.

Enrichment Therapy DSM LEAP program

LEAP is a small group setting, offering half and full day options where students receive academic instruction that is tailored to their individual needs. Learning specialists use language-rich curriculum to teach reading, math, social skills, social studies, science, and writing skills. (If you’re not sure what all that means, I can break it down in laymen terms: The teachers there are basically wizards who work magic to help your child learn and grow in ways you hadn’t dreamed were possible.)

I held back tears when I learned about LEAP and immediately scheduled a free screening for Lucy to see if it would be a good fit for her. Before we knew it, she was enrolled in the program, and we were overjoyed to finally have the help we needed.

After one month in LEAP, Lucy was grasping math concepts that I feared she’d never understand. I saw her reading comprehension soar. She was still home for half of every day to experience the aspects of homeschooling she loved.  For our family, it was the best of both worlds.

Lucy has now been enrolled in LEAP for two years. We continue to see her confidence in her academic abilities grow. Her teacher, classmates, and their families have also become dear to us. They almost feel like an extension of our family.

At the Enrichment Therapy and Learning Center, there is flexibility for various family needs. Many students attend the half-day program and then spend the remainder of their day at public school. Some students may benefit from being enrolled in the LEAP program only for a portion of the school year. There is potential to shore up their skills and then return full time to public school with greater success. Full days at LEAP are also available if that best suits your child’s needs.
