This post is part 4 of 6 in our Home Efficiency Series sponsored by Wyckoff Heating and Cooling.

In part 1, we shared “Home Efficiency 101” from Erica, a busy mom of four. Part 2 was about how to and why it’s essential to change your furnace filter. Part 3 focused on caring for your air conditioning. Today we will talk mostly about indoor air quality.

My family and I live in an older home so it was fascinating to find out more about the possibilities available to help create a better indoor environment regardless of how old or new your home may be. Job, owner of Wyckoff Heating and Cooling was so helpful and informative! There are lots of companies out there who claim to be experts on indoor air quality but in reality the people who deal with this subject day in day out is the professionals at Wyckoff Heating and Cooling. So who better to learn more than them?

Indoor Air Quality

Do you or someone in your family suffer from asthma or allergies? This post is sponsored by Wyckoff heating and cooling. The professionals at Wyckoff Heating and Cooling are indoor air specialists and they KNOW air. So today we are going to talk about indoor air quality and how it affects our families and our homes.

Let’s start with the obvious things you can do to create a better indoor air environment in your home.

  • CHANGE YOUR FILTERS!! Easy right, but often times people forget to do this. Depending on your unit, filters need to be changes monthly for older units and about every 6 months for newer units.
  • Get annual tune ups. Set up a time each year for someone to come out and make sure everything is working properly. Wyckoff works hard to treat their customers with honesty and respect. They want to inform their customers of the best options available! They won’t sell you something you don’t need instead meet you where you are at and talk about the best possibly solutions to better your indoor air quality.

Options for creating better indoor air quality

UV Lights

New to the industry, UV light technology is being utilized to kill mold spores, bacteria and allergens. The most commonly used technology runs 24 hours a day to ensure sterilization. A stick-type light can be installed inside your system’s return air duct to clean the air handler coil, the air that sits in the coil tray. This eliminates the issue at its origination point.

Plasma generator

This maintenance-free technology kills mold spores and dust mites in your HVAC system. The generator is a self-nourishing energy system that generates energy using plasmatic magnetic fields, atoms and other substances to create a reaction that allows atoms to release energy. Though the system does not have direct contact where the mold originates, it’s an energy efficient way to keep allergens from being distributed throughout your home.

Cleaning Air Ducts

Over time, your HVAC system ductwork can acquire dirt and debris. We recommend periodic duct cleaning, once every two to three years on older homes, to remove excess contaminants in the areas you can’t see or clean by yourself.

*Not all of these options are perfect for everyone so reaching out to a heating and cooling professional individually is going to be your best bet to be sure your home is getting the best indoor air quality possible.
