It feels insignificant, but the best way we can help stop the spread of COVID-19 is by staying home.

Not only does this protect our immediate family but it also protects those who we are not in contact with.

We also want to recognize all of the healthcare workers and other essential workers who are tirelessly providing essential services. We are so very thankful for you!

If you are itching to do something while you are stuck at home to help others, here are some things you can do while social distancing.

stay at home7 Things You Can Do to Help Others

1. Donate blood or plasma.

Now more than ever, blood and plasma donations are in high demand. The Outlets of Des Moines in Altoona is hosting a LifeServe Blood Drive Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can schedule an appointment through LifeServe for April 25 or another time.

2. Sew face masks

Now is a great time to dust off your sewing machine and pull out your extra fabric. Here’s an easy tutorial to sew a face mask and here are some no-sew face mask options. You can sew masks for you and your family or donate masks at MercyOne Des Moines.

3. Support local businesses

It may seem insignificant when you order food from a local restaurant or buy something from a locally owned business or boutique, but it means the world to those small business owners. Your orders help keep them in business! Here are businesses that are offering curbside and delivery options.

4. Donate food

Shelters and food pantries need food. Add a few extra items to your next grocery order that you can donate. Food Bank of Iowa is accepting both food donations and financial donations. You can also drop non-perishable items in Little Free Pantries around the metro. Here is a list of locations in Ankeny. Feeding America is another great organization providing food for those in need.

5. Help an at-risk neighbor or family member get groceries or set up grocery delivery.

Reach out to those around you and ask them if they need help. They may not be comfortable asking for it on their own, but it’s harder to say no when someone offers.

6. Stay connected

Encourage your neighbors with window signs, chalk drawings on the sidewalk, and friendly waves–from a safe social distance. We need all the connection we can get! Schedule zoom calls with family and friends, send updates via Marco Polo, or plan a game night on the House Party app.

7. Share books

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been purging and organizing all. the. things. while we’re stuck at home. I made a pile of both adult and kids books and put them in a Little Library in our neighborhood. With local libraries currently closed, this is a great way to share books!

Here are more resources for uncertain times.

Now more than ever, we have to support one another. We’re in this together!
