We Love Grimes: A Guide to Des Moines Area Neighborhoods

Des Moines Neighborhood Guide Grimes Iowa

Grimes is a beautiful city located on the northwest side of the Des Moines metro area, with convenient proximity to Interstates 80 and 35. It has experienced substantial growth in recent years with infrastructure in place for continued development. The Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District boasts a fabulous educational experience for students of all ages with a new elementary school opening next fall. Pristine parks, spacious green spaces, and engaging recreational facilities make Grimes a fun place to explore and experience the natural beauty of Central Iowa. Located in both Polk and Dallas counties, Grimes offers both the convenience of living in a metro area and the sense of community provided in a small town.

What is your favorite part about raising kids here?

We cannot say enough good things about our children’s school experiences. They have had wonderful teachers and fantastic learning opportunities throughout their school years. We also love the walking/biking trails which lead to fun parks and green spaces for play.

What makes Grimes family friendly?

Because of the recent growth, many people living in Grimes are new to the area and have growing families. Neighbors are interested in getting to know each other, creating a community where kids can play together, and taking care of one another. Long-time residents are welcoming as well, willing to share their traditions and community attractions with newcomers.

What events or traditions does Grimes have?

The Grimes Kiwanis Club hosts a gigantic Easter Eggstravaganza Event each year at the community complex. Children of all ages love engaging in a massive egg hunt while enjoying a basket full of candy.

In June, Grimes hosts Governors Days. A big parade, a kiddie parade, car shows, concerts, and tons of delicious food make this a fun family weekend that cannot be missed.

Why would you recommend it for other families?

We enjoy convenient access to all the benefits that the metropolitan area offers; employment opportunities, stellar medical facilities, and fine arts while still feeling connected to a small welcoming community. It’s the best of both worlds.

What makes your community unique?

We are one of the few communities that celebrate Beggar’s Night on Halloween. It’s one our favorite nights of the year because so many people participate! We also have new businesses and housing developments popping up all the time.

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants, or shops in Grimes?

The Radish

Experience local dining at its finest at The Radish! Plus, I can’t get over how the adorable converted house facade adds so much character to this delicious restaurant.

Heavenly Delights

Heavenly Delights is a quintessential Grimes experience. Yummy ice cream served with a smile and enjoyed with many other Grimes residents. We have never visited this establishment without running into a few friends enjoying a treat as well.

Talking Heads Salon

How lucky are we to have an Aveda salon in our own little city?  Hair is a big deal, and it’s great to have a local spot for all our beauty needs.

Grimes is one of my favorite towns too. Your mom and I will always remember how the residents there rallied behind your family when our grandson Lincoln was in the most desperate time of his (successful!) battle against cancer.

And yeah, that ice cream place is wonderful!
