7 of My Favorite Things of 2017

0

2017 was a good year of memories for our family of four. We took a trip to visit my brother, we spent quality time together, experienced growth at home and at work, and we’re all around thankful for another year of health.

Here’s a less, serious, more random list of the little things I enjoyed during 2017.

1. Little leather backpacks.

We took our first airplane trip as a family of 4 this summer and this little gem from Amazon was a good teammate. It holds a diaper, some wipes, plenty of snacks, and my wallet comfortably.

2. Bookcases from Ikea.

Two of these bad boys made our living room feel so cozy in 2017. I had fun filling them with the girls’ art and little knickknacks I wouldn’t otherwise have on display.

3. The letterboard.

The letterboard my husband gave me for Christmas last year is my most beloved home decoration. I use it for milestones, encouraging quotes, funny things to surprise my husband, and as accompanying decor at birthday parties. I hope the encouraging and funny words I put up there will be one of my kids’ memories of home. My husband turned 384 months in 2017 and I couldn’t be prouder of him.

4. These cute little rugs from World Market.

I bought two of these for our bathroom, and they give the room a soft, feminine touch. They’re like giant doilies for your bathroom! What could be better?

5. Living near bike trails.

Polk City has a lot to offer if you can get used to the commute, but I think my favorite thing about living in Polk City, is its proximity to nature. We are two blocks from bike trails, a rugged beach, a maintained beach, great sunsets, and beautiful sunrises over the lake. In 2017, our family took to the bike trails for family rides. The girls are 2 and 5, so we didn’t go 50 miles or anything, but our bike rides were a nice escape from the noise of the busy workday.

6. My kids’ ages and stages

2.5 and 5 are in the sweet spot of young parenting. The 2.5-year-old says the funniest things, she is curious about all things but not yet 3 (because Lord help all the parents of opinionated 3 year olds). The 5-year-old says the most mature things, and I’m starting to see glimpses of who she was made to be. She started kindergarten this year (we did not redshirt her, even though she has an August birthday) and she has enjoyed learning and asserting her new independence. It was terrifying to begin with, but we feel reassured that this school thing is going to be ok.

7. Des Moines Moms Blog

I have so enjoyed writing for Des Moines Moms Blog and being a part of this wonderful team of passionate moms during 2017. During 2018, I’m going to step away from contributing to the blog, but you better believe I’ll still be one of this team’s biggest fans. Thanks for reading in 2017. I hope your 2018 is filled with much health and fulfillment!
