Fall Fashion Trends for Busy Moms

Who has time to scour fashion magazines in order to keep up on the latest trends, let alone the time to actually go shopping? Not this mama. For years, the entirety of my fashion awareness came from the racks closest to the checkout lanes at Target.

I had one hour between feedings and naps to accomplish all my purchasing goals – groceries, household items, gifts, home décor, etc. – and Target was my go-to destination to get it all handled. When it came to fashion trends, if Target didn’t have it, I didn’t know about it.

And while I may have more time to get sucked into the Target Time Vacuum now, there are many other things I’d rather be doing. So, if you’re a busy mom like me and you need someone to cut to the chase on the latest fashion trends for this fall, here are my top five picks.

Menswear-Inspired Shoes

Oxfords and loafers are huge this fall, especially in deep colors like burgundy and brown. Replace your ballet flats with these styles and you’ll be telling the world who’s boss!

These come in traditional leather, but try patent leather or suede to add texture and interest to your steps. Bonus: whether you just had a baby or are in the process of getting your body back after a baby, shoes always fit!

Floppy Hats

Perfect for those outings to the apple orchard, pumpkin patch, or a shopping day with your mom or a friend, the floppy hat is feminine with a Bohemian twist. Black, navy, tan, or burgundy are your go-to colors. These hats make a statement, and others will be so caught up in your cuteness, they won’t even notice you skipped washing your hair!

Skinny Scarves or Chokers

Remember when we all wore velvet chokers around our necks? We’ve recently been watching the original Full House TV series with our kids, and DJ Tanner rocks this 90s trend.

Well, whether you want it or not, they’re back! Chokers or skinny scarves are all the rage for fall. Personally, I like my thick, warm scarves come autumn, so this trend will be a stretch for me (or maybe it’s just good advice to never wear a trend the second time around?), but don’t be surprised if you see this on the college girls you meet. And high-fives to you fashion-forward mamas willing to give it a whirl!

Bomber/Varsity Jacket

There’s nothing cooler than a bomber jacket, and this fall is full of them. In leather, faux fur, lace, or knit, this look can fit any price point and, coupled with a pair of aviator sunglasses, leave you looking as cool as Kelly McGillis in Top Gun.

This trend can lean more in the varsity letter jacket direction, too. Wear it with a micro-pleated skirt or cropped trousers for a sporty, weekend look at your next tailgate… or youth soccer game!

Fall Colors: Navy, Burgundy, and Plum

Expect to see a lot of navy, burgundy, and plum this fall. You’ll see them in florals (yes, florals for fall!), caplets (mini capes for all you supermoms!), and even suede skirts. (In case you were wondering, I wore a royal blue suede skirt to my sophomore homecoming. Of course I did.)

Monochromatic styling, wearing the same color top to bottom, is still very popular and very slimming, too. Off-the-shoulder or one-shoulder looks for tops will be big and yet, on the other hand, so will turtlenecks. We’re talking full-neck, tight turtlenecks. So whether you want to show off those collar bones or cover up from the neck down, you’ll be right on trend.
