Foss Swim School in Ankeny opens in late March, bringing a Minnesota couple’s passion to Iowa for the first time.
A tragedy inspired Jon and Susan Foss’ life’s work. Jon was taught to respect the water and embrace swimming by his mother, who lost a sibling to drowning.
In 1993, Jon and Susan founded Foss Swim School in Minnesota to make safer swimmers a priority and recognize that kids best learn to swim when they learn to love water.
There’s so much in life to enjoy in water, and being a safer swimmer makes parents and children more confident around water,” Susan Foss says. “Swimming is a foundation for a lifetime of fun, safety, and physical, social, and mental benefits.”
The couple’s approach, backed by decades of success, has grown to 16 locations in Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and North Dakota.
“We hand-pick teachers and staff who are outgoing, love working with kids, and who are driven to help others succeed by delivering progress and fun the FOSS way,” Foss says.
Now, Foss Swim School is bringing their Swim Path™ curriculum to Iowa, opening an Ankeny location in late March.
Learn to love the water at any age
Foss Swim School offers lessons for adults and children, primarily teaching in quarters with students placed in classes of similar age and ability. Foss offers private lessons, camps, family swims and skills clinics in Ankeny.
“Laughter is at the heart of our unique curriculum, and graduation reflects confidence and mastery,” said Foss.
Purpose-built facility opening in March 2020
Ankeny’s Foss Swim School at 2455 Southwest State St. has a 68-foot-by-45-foot pool designed specifically for its lessons.
Jon has swam, coached and taught in countless pools and experienced first hand how ineffective they can be. He started designing in 1994 and has since designed 16 facilities with a total of 23 pools.
Comfortable showers and family changing spaces, clean air and 91-degree water optimize learning. The building will also have a climate-controlled viewing room for parents and a small retail store.
Preview classes start March 14. Families can tour the facility and get in the pool for a sample lesson and receive a recommendation on which class to enroll in, before classes begin March 29.
All are invited to the March 28 Grand Opening event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
