Des Moines Moms Blog is thrilled to come alongside the Greater Des Moines Partnership to present the first ever Des Moines Winter Games.

The Winter Games is a free kid-friendly event in downtown Des Moines Friday February 9 and Saturday February 10. Families can enjoy an Opening Ceremonies Watch Party, a spectacular fireworks show, a winter sports playground, demonstrations, contests, food trucks, hot drinks and cool fun. The Winter Games is an opportunity to support Team USA in our own backyard in the Historic East Village!

What else is there to do in Des Moines this February? Plenty! Show your little ones your love with mother-son and father-daughter dances, attend one of the many musicals on stage this month, or celebrate Galentine’s Day while you channel your inner artist.

February 2018 events and activities

Feb. 2 | Marvel Madness: Black Panther Edition, Des Moines Public Library, Central Library, downtown
4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Come test your superhero skills through genius games and kool-aid alchemy. This free event allows participants to create their own Black Panther origami friend and take home their very own mystical pendants. Best suited for ages 8 and up.

Feb. 2 | Friday Funday: The Mitten Des Moines Community Playhouse
Performances at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 1:30 p.m.
This interactive theatre show is for children ages 4 to 6, making it a fun choice for preschools, child care centers, kindergarten classes, and families.
Tickets are $6 per person.

Feb. 2-3 | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Live in Concert, Des Moines Civic Center
7:30 p.m. Friday; 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Watch the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on a giant screen while the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra performs every note from John Williams’ movie score.

Feb. 3 | Des Moines Storytellers Project: Everyday Miracles, Des Moines Playhouse
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Enjoy stories from when local and notable storytellers experienced “blind luck, spiritual moments and awakenings.” The Storytellers Project is a series of live storytelling nights. USA TODAY newsrooms, including the Des Moines Register, curate and host nights of true, first-person stories from neighbors and notables. General admission is $10.

Feb. 3 | Father-Son Football Night, Chick-fil-A, Ankeny
5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Bond over football and have a meaningful discussion about sportsmanship at this special Father-Son event. Iowa Barnstormer players will be available for pictures and autographs. Register online.

Feb. 8-11 | Des Moines Home + Garden Show, Iowa Events Center, Des Moines
Local and national experts will offer their design insight, including Matt Muenster, from the DIY Network’s Bath Crashers, and Tyler Wisler from HGTV’s Design Star. Find fresh inspiration, helpful products, and fantastic deals in remodeling, home improvement, decor, and outdoor spaces with hundreds of experts all under one roof. Feb. 9 | Sweetheart Dance, Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Dance the night away with your favorite Valentine. Bring the whole family to Blank Park Zoo for an evening filled with music, sweet treats, and crafts. Cost for members is $12 per person; $15 for non-members. Children one and up will need a ticket.

Feb. 9 & 10 | Winter Games, Brenton Skating Plaza, Downtown Des Moines
Feb. 9 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Feb 10 from noon to 5 p.m. 
Families can enjoy an Opening Ceremonies Watch Party, a spectacular fireworks show, a winter sports playground, demonstrations, contests, food trucks, hot drinks and cool fun. Plus, the event is FREE to enjoy! Regular ice skating admission and skate rental fees apply at Brenton Skating Plaza.

Feb. 10 | Daddy Daughter Dessert Day, Creme Cupcake, Des Moines
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Grab a dessert and enjoy some special time with your sweetie. Creme will capture photos as requested. Each daughter will receive a special gift while supplies last. (Mommy and Me day at Creme is Feb. 17 – same time, same place!)

Feb. 10, 24, 26 | Black History Film Month, Des Moines Public Library, Forest Ave. Location
Times Vary
The Forest Avenue Library is showing three films during Black History month as part of a film series: Marshall (Feb. 10, 2 p.m.) stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall. The movie covers part of Marshall’s early career. Marshall would eventually become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Loving (Feb. 24, 2 p.m.) is the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple arrested in the 1960s for violating interracial marriage laws. The series concludes with Selma (Feb. 26, 5:30 p.m.), a film about the famed 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery that aimed to help secure equal voting rights. Popcorn will be provided while supplies last during each of these movies.

Feb. 11 | Disney Live! Mickey & Minnie’s Doorway to Magic, Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Join Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and the comical duo of Donald and Goofy as 25 Disney characters surprise and captivate in this dazzling show.

Feb. 13 | Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: King for a Day!, Stephens Auditorium, Ames
6 p.m.
Based on the #1 PBS KIDS TV series, this live-action show has delighted audiences on stages across the country. Now, in its third year of touring, favorite characters are hopping back on board Trolley and coming to Ames. Tickets (starting at $25 plus service fees) are available at Ticketmaster.com, 800-745-3000 or the Iowa State Center Ticket Office.

Feb. 13 | Galentine’s Day Painting, Pinot’s Palette, 900 42nd St., Des Moines
7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Grab some friends and enjoy a night out while you channel your inner artist. You’ll leave with some girlfriend-themed art called “All The Lovely Ladies,” too!

Feb. 16 | Mother-Son Dance, Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Ave., Clive
6:30 p.m.
Enjoy the fun of a superhero-themed party for moms, grandmas, aunts, special neighbors to take their sons, grandsons, nephews, etc! Attendees can enjoy games, a photo booth, and a dessert bar. Tickets are $30 per couple (regardless of the number of children). Proceeds will benefit summer camp scholarships. Advanced tickets are available online until Feb. 14, and will be available at the door.

Feb. 16 – March 4 | The Sound of Music, CAP Theatre, 201 1st Ave S., Altoona
7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2:30 p.m. Sundays
Bring the family and sing along to this beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. Tickets available online.

Feb. 17 | Mommy and Me Sweetheart DanceHoliday Inn Hotel Downtown – Mercy Campus, Des Moines
1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
This Valentine’s fundraising event is created exclusively for central Iowa mothers and their children to support Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa. Celebrate with your own little sweetheart(s) and enjoy crafting, dancing, and sampling from appetizers (and a dessert buffet). Tickets are only available online in advance of the event and space is limited.

Feb. 17 | AIR PLAYDes Moines Civic Center
10 a.m. (sensory-friendly performance) and 1 p.m. (public performance)
AIR PLAY is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air, transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty. The family-friendly show features flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen! Tickets are available at online, at the Civic Center Ticket Office, or by phone at (515) 246-2300.

Feb. 23 | Iowa State Gymnastics Daddy Daughter Disney Date Night, Hilton Coliseum, Ames
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Watch Iowa State Gymnastics, meet Disney Princesses, and dress as your favorite Disney Character. Tickets are $8 and include two general admission tickets and one tiara.

Feb. 23-25 | Spring Arts & Crafts Show, Varied Industries Building, Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This is Iowa’s largest show, with more than 300 talented exhibitors from seven states presenting and selling. Admission is $6. Children 10 and under are free. Attendees will receive a three-day re-entry hand stamp good for the entire run of the show.
Show hours are Friday night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is free.

Feb. 23 – March 11 | Miss Nelson is Missing!, Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre at Des Moines Community Playhouse
7 p.m. Fridays; 1 and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays
Lessons of appreciation and respect abound in this funny, kid-friendly play based on the classic children’s book. Playhouse children’s theatre productions are intended for ages 5 and up. Tickets start at $15.

Feb. 24 | DIY in the Junction 2018, Valley Junction, West Des Moines
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Discover it yourself! Stores in Valley Junction will have a day full of demonstrations, classes, make-and-takes, samplers, and crafts.

Feb. 25 | Daddy-Daughter Skate, Skate North Incrediroll, Des Moines
1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Plan a fun afternoon with your special date (or dates). Admission and skate rental for two (daddy and daughter) is $10, and an additional $5 for each additional daughter.
