One Word.

A picture is worth a thousand words. So life must be worth more than that, right? But could you define it with just one?

A few years ago I stumbled upon a blog that talked about using a word to represent how you wanted to define your next year. A single word to help frame your mindset for the new year. A simple word with a definition that could span across everything you encounter in a year. One word.

Someone who is never at a loss for words, I couldn’t find one. I could not look at my life and find one word that pinned down how I wanted to view my life that year. How can I look forward in a year and determine how I wanted to be? That was scary. Then it clicked. Like the cowardly lion, I needed courage to be a forward thinker. I needed courage to step outside of my comfort zone. Courage was my word.

When I found my word, I captured it on a necklace to inspire me everyday. It was a subtle reminder to have courage in the moments that I doubted myself.  That year, I decided that I wasn’t happy with my job so I did what I HATE doing and interviewed for a new one – which I got.

image-3This year, inspiration for my word was not hard to find. With two little ones we are always on the run. 2013 came and went. I don’t remember much (mostly due to sleep deprivation from a newborn!). This year I have vowed to slow down.

My word is Dance. I want to learn to dance (not literally). I want to learn to live carefree. To not stress over small things. To take in each moment and not let it pass me by. To enjoy my girls and laugh with my husband.

So here is my challenge to you. Choose a word. Honor. Faithful. Energetic. Carefree. Beautiful. Alive. Choose something that has meaning to you, a powerful definition that stands out against all the other words that crowd our lives. Write it down. Draw it out. Tape it to your bathroom mirror. Find a Bible verse or quote that speaks to the word and inspires you. Make it part of your morning routine.

This is your year. You get to decide how you define your life. You get to choose the moments that define you. You get to choose the words that define your moments. What word will you choose?

  1. Someone in a Bible study brought this up too. I love it! So much better than a resolution – but a way to live to your life. My word this year is PRAYER. God has taught me so much the past few months on praying for my husband and now praying for my boys! May I be committed to more PRAYER this year.
