Decorating Ideas: Making Your House a Home

1

Decorating your house can be overwhelming, expensive, and time consuming, but it can also be fun, budget friendly and easy! One of my hobbies is decorating (and redecorating) my house. I tend to lean towards a farmhouse style (think shiplap, barn lights, old window frames) with lots of personal touches thrown in.

I love spending time at home, and I want my house to be a place that is welcoming, cozy and comfortable.

Here are some of my favorite tips on how to decorate and add style to your house.

Add Interest with the Unexpected

I like to fill my house with unique and meaningful items.

My brother-in-law drew this picture of our previous house, and it now holds a place of honor in our mudroom. It makes me so happy to have a reminder of the place our family started in the place where we will continue to write our story.

I love a colorful front door and the pop of color it adds to an otherwise neutral house.

I almost went with yellow, but at the last second I changed it to this unexpected blue. I could not be happier with the fun and color it brings to my entry.

Gallery Walls

If there is a wall in my house, it has probably been turned into a gallery wall. A gallery wall is a great way to add interest, group items, and fill up those big expansive walls in your house.

My mom taught me to use the “rules of threes” while decorating, so you will find all my gallery walls with odd numbers of items on them.

The idea is odd numbers are more appealing to the eye, so I have gallery walls ranging from 3 items all the way up to 23!

Target Dollar Spot and Flea Markets Are Your Friend

I get a lot of my decor at the Target Dollar Spot. I check it out every time I hit up Target, and I usually walk away with a piece or two. They have really cute stuff that is anywhere between $1 and $5. I’ve picked up pillows, garlands, LOTS of seasonal decor, and stuff for my kids rooms.

I got all the stuff in the picture below at the Dollar Spot. It makes the cutest vignette and cost around $10!

I also love to check out flea market, junk sales, and garage sales. You can almost always find something to make your own with a little elbow grease and spray paint.

Invest in Statement Pieces

Most of the items are bought on a budget, but I will splurge every now and then on a more expensive piece that will make a big statement. I bought the Bakery sign at a local store (Vine and Willow in Altoona). It was more than I would typically spend on one piece, but it makes a huge statement and can be seen from many different spots in the house.

I once read that if you don’t like something in your house you should change it.

Such a simple idea right? That statement has stuck with me and has given me the courage to take risks like spray painting my master bedroom furniture that I hated a dark navy blue (it turned out awesome) with little thought.

Making your house a home is so fun because there is no right or wrong way to do it. To get started, look at what you already have that you can repurpose, buy some spray paint, head to Target, and go to town!

Happy Decorating!
