When I think of Christmas, many things pop into my mind: cookies, craziness, trees, gifts, the Christmas story, and of course, the sounds of Christmas. Christmas Songs, Christmas Music, Christmas Carols. I love it. Well, I should say, I love most of it.
One of my family’s Christmas traditions involved putting on some Christmas music while decorating the tree and the house.
Here is a list of some of my favorites from growing up that hold a special place in my heart:
- Christmas with the Chipmunks – We actually had (and still do) the LP record and belted out “Christmas Don’t Be Late!” with the high-pitched lovable rodents.
- Merry Christmas by Bing Crosby – Really, how can you have Christmas without White Christmas and Mele Kalikimaka. Actually, the whole album. It’s so good.
- Elvis’ Christmas Album by Elvis Presley – Most notably I’ll Be Home for Christmas and Blue Christmas. (Side note, if you sing the song and add a few extra ‘blues’ to the lyrics, it really adds a whole new dimension to the classic.)
- Christmas Portrait by The Carpenters – Our family was a Carpenter’s family. Yep, even my sister’s name is Karen. My favorite songs were Merry Christmas, Darling and Do you Hear What I Hear?
- Barking Dogs and Meowing Cats – I’m not sure which version we had of this when I was in my tweens, but we sure did get a kick out of it. So much fun!
- Mannheim Steamroller – Who didn’t have this on in the background growing up? Classic, fun, lively, and festive.
