From the Owner

I am so excited to be sharing my blog post today on the Des Moines Mom’s Blog.  INSTYLE by Colbi is an interior design and home staging business located in Ankeny, IA.  Growing up, I always had a passion for the home décor world. I was always re-decorating and re-arranging my room.  After graduating from Iowa State University and working in the interior design industry for awhile, I decided to take the leap and start my own design and staging business.

At INSTYLE by Colbi, we work with realtors, home builders, and homeowners on their staging and design projects.  Of course, some of these clients are busy Moms with little ones at home.

I recently helped a busy Mom of 2 decorate a couple of rooms in her new home.  Her family has lived in their new home for a little over a year, but she had not had the time to do much decorating on her own.  She gave me a call and wanted me to help her out!  Our main focus was on decorating her living room and office.

Here are a few before photos of her living room.  The first challenge this Mom had with her living room was with the layout of her furniture. She did not feel it was as functional as she wanted for her and her family.  Secondly, she wanted to add some color to the room to brighten it up.  And, she wanted to add some type of window treatments to the wall with the 3 large windows and still be able to keep the light coming through the windows to help brighten up the room.

So, I went to work and this is what we came up with for her living room.  As you can see from the above after pictures of her living room, the arrangement of the furniture was changed by swapping the sofa and loveseat, placing the chair in the corner of the wall it was up against, and moving one of the end tables next to the chair.  The new arrangement of furniture made the room look and feel more spacious and usable.

Next, we had to come up with a window treatment design for this large wall with 3 windows.  We decided on using four small decorative rods with single curtain panels that had a fun geometric pattern to enhance the appearance of this wall and add some color.  This window treatment design worked great as it did not block the light from coming through the windows.

After finding the curtains, it was time to add in some artwork and pillows to tie the whole look together and add some color.  We found this geometric wall hanging that had some color in it and that tied in really well with the curtain panels.  This artwork was placed on the wall above the chair as you can see from the after picture above.

Then, it was time for pillows!  Pillows are such a fun accessory and can really change the look and feel of a room.  We used pillows that were light gray and turquoise that also incorporated the geometric pattern and placed them on the sofa and chair as you can see from the after pictures above.

Next, it was time to work on the office in her home.  Here are some before photos of her office.  For this room she wanted to add some color, change the arrangement of furniture, do something about her current window treatments, get rid of the book case, and find a piece of furniture that would keep all of the books organized, but more out of sight.

Here are some after pictures of her office.  I ended up finding this abstract canvas artwork that is hung on the wall directly behind the desk.  This artwork had some different colors in it that tied in well with everything in this room.  Then, the layout of the room was changed by moving the accent chair to a different corner in the room, getting rid of the book case, and replacing the bookcase with a cabinet to enclose some of the books and allow for an area to set the printer.  The drapes that were already in the office were a little bit too short, so we ended up letting the hem out of the bottom without having to drill more holes in the wall to move the curtain rod higher.

After the project was complete, the busy Mom was very happy with the results.  She said “it made her home feel so much more homey”.  I know you Mom’s out there are very busy with your daily duties and with caring for children.  If you are in need of any decorating/design or staging help, I am here to help you!
