bullet journal 101

If you’re anything like me, you love lists. You make grocery lists, to-do lists, and a daily to-do list. The only problem is your lists are written all over the place. Some are written on sticky notes, some on your hands, and some on the back of your child’s coloring book pages.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve acquired multiple calendars and journals and have attempted to stay organized with them. (They were so pretty you just had to buy them!) You end up not liking the layouts, continuing to use those sticky notes, or just forgetting you even bought a calendar.

If you love organization but haven’t found the perfect organizational tool you should try a bullet journal.

What is a bullet journal?

A bullet journal is a customizable organizational system where you can literally include anything and everything you want in it. You can make it as colorful and in-depth as you’d like or you can keep it as simple and plain as you want to.

It’s what works best for you, and that’s what I love about it. It’s perfect for people like myself who have a million lists floating around, (on paper and in their head) who love paper and pen to-do lists, and people who are into goal-setting and habit tracking. For example, I’ve included not only daily calendars in my bullet journal but a page where I can keep track of books I want to read as well as a page for movies I want to watch.

What do I need to start a bullet journal?

The beauty of a bullet journal is that it’s completely up to you on how in depth you want to make your personalized journal. All you absolutely need is a journal of your choice and a pen. But if you want to jazz it up some, you can include anything from colored pens, to washi tape, to stickers. This is all completely up to you and how you prefer your journal to look. I do suggest journals that have dotted lines such as this one. This makes it easier to draw boxes or grids for calendars. I would also suggest pens that don’t bleed through the paper. These are a great choice.

What should I include in my bullet journal?

Here are some ideas to include in your journal that will help keep all your thoughts into one organizational space:

-bucket lists
-restaurants to try
-books to read
-places to travel
-yearly, monthly, and weekly goals
-expenses
-debt tracker
-weekly meal planning
-grocery lists
-recipes for the month
-daily water log
-appointments
-fitness goals
-birthdays
-quotes/affirmations
-emergency phone numbers/contacts
-family goals

These are just a few ideas. The options are endless! It’s all about you and what you would like to include.

Pinterest is a great tool to help you with page ideas and design ideas. Don’t overthink it. Simply include what works best for you and your lifestyle. Remember that it’s a way to get all of those thoughts, ideas, appointments, and other “mom brain” thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

Do you use a bullet journal already? What are some pages you include in yours?
