Boys’ Spring Style!

It’s Boymom Week on the blog, and our super-heroic moms of all boys are talking all things BOY! Click here to read other posts in this special series brought to you by DMMB’s boymoms.

Boymom Courtney

I am lucky enough to be a boymom. It’s dirty, it’s messy, and it is crazy, but overall it’s just pretty amazing. Since we don’t have any little girls to dress, I get to have fun with little boy style. Many people think boys get slighted in the clothing department, but I don’t believe it one bit. I love to make them look like tiny men with a side of spunk, and they are usually on board with my style choices! Today, I am going to share a few of my favorite clothing items for boys and some tips for styling your little man.

My Must-Have Wardrobe Essentials for Boys {add a little spunk}

First, you need some good T-shirts. I love a unique shirt that shows off a little personality. Lucky for us, we have Raygun right here in downtown Des Moines! These shirts are just $20 and make for the perfect start to an outfit. Great for layering underneath a button-down shirt, a comfy zip-up hoodie, or the perfect cardigan. This cardigan is one of my favorite pieces – so versatile! P.S. – I am a complete sucker for sleeveless shirts for little boys. Their tiny little muscles just melt my heart!

Next up, shoes. I think the shoes are just the icing on the cake for making your little man look put together. When I am looking for shoes I try to buy ones they can wear with everything. We currently own both of these. The Converse are actually our church shoes. When you are a little boy you can totally get away with it, and they just scream little boy to me! As for the pair from Old Navy, they are the perfect spring/summer shoe. They are water and mud proof (a MUST for us), and they don’t slip off. The material reminds me of Crocs, so they wash up really well.

Okay, so now that you have your spunk with cute shoes and tees for your little man, you need some basics. I LOVE Old Navy’s $10 jeans. They are nice, they come in a variety of styles, and they are durable. Yes, the knees start to get worn after a year, but come on, we wear them all the time! For spring/summer we always add a few pairs of plaid shorts or khaki cargo shorts. Easy to dress up or dress down. You can find them at a variety of stores, and they are the perfect way to make your little man look sharp!

Little Kid, Big Style {Finnean takes over Target’s dressing room}

After Katie’s awesome post about spring fashion, I was inspired to do a little boys’ version. I asked my oldest son, Finnean, if he would help me with my project and he agreed. Okay, okay, I bribed him a little with some candy, but he was completely excited. I wanted to show you that you can create a few different looks with many of the same pieces. Mix and match – more bang for your buck!

We started with Finnean picking out something he loved – the shark T-shirt – and went from there. It was easy to find items that had the same colors in them, making it a breeze to coordinate different outfits. Don’t be afraid to layer and mix patterns. This is what takes a regular tee to a great looking outfit. We found everything from a Sunday Best outfit to some great play gear.

The best part? Everything we tried on was under $15. Now, I understand that if you buy everything – that adds up. So find a few pieces that you love and buy those. Make sure they coordinate with what you have already, and your little man is set to rock some new outfits! Don’t forget to hit up your local consignment shops, too. They are a great place to pick up a few fun pieces at a discount. Me ‘n Mommy To Be is my favorite. My other favorite is the Baby Gap clearance rack. Adorable, usually out-of-my-price-range items, for a steal! This bargain-loving momma can’t get enough!

Now, let’s talk about those red pants from Target. Many moms have said their boys won’t wear jeans. These are your answer! They are super soft but structured and also come in a grey and a light blue. Perfect for when your littles need to look nice! P.S. – We totally came home with them, and I think we need the vest, too!

Play Clothes {because boys will be boys}

fsuperheroLet’s be honest, we spend a lot of time in play clothes or in superhero costumes. They are usually hand-me-downs or Target clearance rack items. Things that are okay if the dirt  or paint doesn’t come out of them. I love the Circo brand from Target and the Jumping Beans brand from Kohl’s. Usually under $5 per item, and they have fun patterns/prints. Consignment shops are also your friends for play clothes. I am not a huge garage sale person – I just hate getting up early on a Saturday morning – but I know so many people who score big at garage sales.

I have shared my favorite things and a few fashion tips. Now, I want to hear from YOU! Where do you shop for boy clothes? Do you have a favorite item? Where do you find the best deals? Tell us about them in the comments!

    I personally love Once Upon a Child more than Me n’ Mommy because the selection is alot more. You do have to be prepared to dig though… and I try to go on the off seasons because thats when you score from people who are cleaning out closets. You also should go prepared to spend 1-2 hours digging/coordinating and try to leave the kiddos at home to be the most efficient.

    If you ever go to Sioux Falls, they have an AWESOME Once Upon a Child as well… more toys (super organized) and tons of clothes.

      Tricia- yes! Love that advice…be prepared to dig! They have so many options, thanks for sharing!

    I agree…I love dressing my boys like little men! It is getting harder as my five year old has his own
    opinions now and always has to look “awesome” for the ladies! We find tons of stuff at Once Upon a Child. But WHERE did you get the Boy Mom Shirt? !

    • Courtney Wagler March 23, 2014 at 1:25 am #

      Oh my, Dawn! That is so cute! Gotta love those 5 year old opinions. As for the shirts, we had them made for this series. I think there has been some talk of getting more printed. Stay tuned!

    Rooney (even though she’s a girl) has the umbrella tee (she wore it yesterday) and black high top Converse. I’m glad to know that if I have a boy next time they can share clothes! 🙂

    • Courtney Wagler March 23, 2014 at 1:27 am #

      Heck yes, Kelsey! I bet she rocks those converse too!

    I agree boys are fun to dress…at first. In the early years it’s always fun to dress them up like little men, but now that my oldest is getting bigger (he’s almost 7), I am finding it extremely difficult to find things that aren’t making my little boy look like a little punk. I’m so turned off by skulls and crossbones and other dark and gloomy items. I just want my little boy to look like the sweet & happy kid that he is…for as long as I can anyway.
