An Unashamed Patriot Mom

2

I am an unashamed Patriot mom – a believer in raising kids to love God first, their family second and to appreciate the incredible heritage that our forefathers (and foremothers!) left for us.

Patriotism runs deep in my veins with ancestry that extends back to the brave souls who came to this land on the Mayflower.

I had the incredible privilege of growing up in Massachusetts, surrounded by the sites of our nation’s founding. The home of Paul Revere, the Old North Bridge, and Bunker Hill Monument were all less than a 30-minute drive from my home. I soaked up our country’s history much like sun-seekers soak up UV rays. I basked in the amazing and intricate details of the brave men and women who fought to give us a free land in which to raise our children.

My own children were first raised in California, then in Des Moines when my husband got a job in Iowa in 1989. I continued to share the importance of being a good citizen, taking them with me to the voting booth on election days long before they were tall enough to see what was inside that “secret” station.

The United States was their country. As they grew up, they would be the next generation to make an impact on its leaders and on defending its borders. That’s why it did not surprise me when my son announced he wanted to “do something” after 9-11 happened. That “something” turned into a career in the United States Navy where he has become a Navy Flight Officer. I am so proud of the man he has become, taking seriously the heritage that his ancestors worked so hard to achieve.

Being a Patriot mom is not easy. It means letting go – allowing our sons and daughters to follow God’s path for them, sometimes supporting them as they stare into the face of danger. It is then our privilege to be prayer warriors at home, asking their Creator to watch over them because they are always in His sight – even when no longer in ours.

Fields of the Fatherless by Elaine Marie CooperNow I am an unashamed Patriot Grandma. I write fictional books about our country’s heritage, bringing America’s history to life in a way that a textbook cannot. I pray that my words will inspire my grandchildren and others to appreciate this great nation that God has blessed us with. It is a nation founded on principles of freedom and on faith in God, despite what some contemporaries would have us believe.

It is a freedom we cannot take for granted.

As the old song says, “Teach your children well.” Teach them to love God and to love their family. And to treasure our freedom that often requires sacrifice.

Happy 238th Birthday, America!

    • Middle America has its own beauty and history. But I encourage every American, if they can, to visit the history of our nation that seems to fill every nook and cranny in New England and elsewhere. It is inspiring to stand where our forefathers stood and let the era of our country’s birth surround us. Thanks so much for commenting, Debra!
