7 Fun Summer Dates around Des Moines |Des Moines Moms Blog

The more kids we have, date nights when we actually get a babysitter and get out of the house are fewer and farther between. But I know how important they are both for my sanity and for the health of our marriage! Now that we’re expecting baby #3 at the end of the summer, I’m on a mission to go on as many dates as we can before it’s even harder to get away!

Sometimes it takes all your brain power and energy to line up a babysitter; when it comes to planning what we’re actually going to do when we are away from the kids, my mind goes blank.

Here’s a list of some of our go-to dates around Des Moines.

1. Catch an outdoor movie.

This is your standard dinner and movie date with an outdoor twist! Pack a picnic, grab a blanket or chairs, and head to a park for a free movie! Here’s a calendar of free outdoor movies around Des Moines this summer. A lot of the movies are cartoons, but there are some classics, too, like Star Wars, Roman Holiday, and Goonies.

2. Find a food truck.

Sometimes it’s easier to get a babysitter during the day. One of our favorite lunch dates last summer was when we hit up the food trucks downtown. During the week, trucks line up around the Western Gateway Park around 11 a.m. We each tried something from a different vendor and shared.

3. Play mini golf.

It’s fun to have an activity to do besides eating or watching a movie on a date. And a little friendly competition is good for your relationship! We’ve been to West Grand Golf and North Forty Miniature Golf.

4. Eat ice cream.

Skip dinner and go straight to dessert! Snookies in Beaverdale is a local favorite (try the malts or dip cones), or head to Classic Frozen Custard on the south side or in Altoona.

5. Listen to live music.

Enjoy an evening of music and drinks at the Jasper Winery summer concert series every Thursday night from 6-9 p.m. It’s a family-friendly atmosphere, but the point of a date is to leave the kids at home!

6. Go boating.

You don’t need a motor boat to get out on the water. Head to Gray’s Lake and watch the sun set over downtown from a canoe, kayak, peddle boat, or sailboat.

7. Look at the stars.

What’s more romantic than sitting under the stars with your honey? Adam and I used to do this a lot when we were dating. Our favorite spots are Saylorville Lake or Jasper Park. Bonus—it’s free!

What are some of your favorite things to do in the summer around Des Moines with your hubby?
