We Love Waukee: A Guide to Des Moines Area Neighborhoods

0

Des Moines neighborhood guide - waukeeWaukee is recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities within the state of Iowa (currently 17,945 residents). It is located in Dallas County—the fifth fastest-growing county within the United States. It is nestled just west of Des Moines, off of Interstate-80 to the north. Waukee offers a family-friendly environment featuring great amenities such as parks, trails, and special events. It is home to the Waukee Community School District – the state’s fastest-growing district, known for high-quality educational opportunities. Waukee is dedicated to economic development and expanding business opportunities, including the creation of its mixed-use development, Kettlestone. For more information, visit www.Waukee.org.

What is your favorite part about raising kids here?

Waukee is known for its top-notch schools, so we’re excited to have our kids grow up in them. Investment in public safety makes for a very safe community. There’s always something to do, whether we’re walking or biking on the City’s 19+ miles of trails, hitting up the parks, or participating in fun annual festivals. We also frequent the Waukee Public Library. It’s an easy place to get to know your neighbors and make life-long friends.

What makes Waukee family friendly?

Again, the schools, the safe and quiet atmosphere, neighborhood trails and parks, and community programs and events provide families what they need to stay busy!

What events does Waukee have?

Summer festivals such as Celebrate Waukee and the Fourth of July are local favorites. People come from all around for the big fireworks show. Waukee also puts on great family events such as FamilyFest, WinterFest, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Public Safety Day, the Waukee Firefighters’ Pancake Breakfast, and more. The warm months bring a lot of block parties, as the community is very tight-knit.

Why would you recommend Waukee for other families?

It’s a great suburban location within quick driving distance of downtown Des Moines and other retail, dining, and entertainment destinations. Kids will grow up in a safe, quiet community with great schools and plenty of learning and playing opportunities for all ages. It’s big enough to have great amenities, but small enough that it has community pride and you can really get to know a lot of the residents.

What makes your community unique?

The population has doubled in the last decade. Waukee is growing at about three people a day. You have to think that to have that much growth, it’s really a great place to live and grow.

What are some of your favorite businesses, restaurants, or shops Waukee?

More and more personal and professional services are popping up these days, but here are our current favorites:

Dairy Queen and the Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe

We have a three-year-old (and pregnancy cravings), so we visit Dairy Queen and the Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe often.

Fresh Mediterranean Express

I am obsessed with their gyros and the gyro salad.

Waukee Hardware Store

We’re big DIYers, and are at the Waukee Hardware Store often. My daughter especially loves it because they have a resident kitty cat named Andie who is very friendly.

Echo’s Cookie Shop

The fresh cinnamon rolls and monster cookie bars from Echo’s Cookie Shop are to die for!
