We Love Urbandale: A Guide to Des Moines Area Neighborhoods

0

des moines neighborhood guide - urbandaleUrbandale is located in the central area of Des Moines, just slightly west of the city proper. It is surrounded by Grimes, Johnston, West Des Moines, Clive, and Waukee, making it truly in middle of everything! No matter where you go, it’s only about 15 or 20 minutes away. There are about 42,000 people who live here, which makes it a average sized suburb. It has six elementary schools, as well as a middle school, and a high school.

What is your favorite part about raising kids here?

My favorite part of raising my children here is that they have the best of everything. We have easy access to all the “city” amenities, yet still have quiet neighborhoods, plenty of parks and bike trails, and a kind of “small town” feel.

What makes Urbandale family friendly?

There is always something going on! Whether it is a little festival, a play at the high school, or story time at the library – there is always a family friendly event to go to. There are 48 different parks in Urbandale (it seems like you can find one no matter where you are!) and they are almost all connected by bike trails.

What events or traditions does your community have?

Urbandale’s Fourth of July parade is seriously the BEST around! It is so big and so well attended (and the kiddos get sooo much candy!). The fireworks that evening are also spectacular! It is definitely a must to attend the celebrations that day.

Why would you recommend living in Urbandale to other families?

Urbandale is a great community that always feels safe, and always has something fun going on. Our school system is great, the library is great, the parks are great, and there is a good variety of restaurants and grocery stores—it really has everything you could want!

What makes your community unique?

We have an interesting combination of older homes and newer homes, so no matter what kind of house you are looking for you can find it. It seems like every street is filled with families, and there are always kids playing in yards, neighbors hanging out in driveways, and a great sense of community.

What are some of your favorite local businesses, stores, or restaurants in Urbandale?

The Machine Shed

If you are looking for great Midwestern “down-home” family style cooking, The Machine Shed is your place! You definitely won’t leave hungry! Plus they have a fun little gift shop in the front that always has unique and fun finds.

Palmer’s Deli

Palmer’s is a great little family run deli! They have a fun selection of unique and delicious sandwiches, sides, and homemade desserts. It’s definitely family friendly!

Living History Farms

Living History Farms is such a fun place to take your family! Learn about the history of Iowa with hands on experiences, sights and sounds! This is a great place for the kids to get out some energy and learn at the same time!
