Tips for Planning a Couples Getaway (with Photos!)

Every year, a group of six (or more) of our friends travel together on a Couples Weekend Getaway. We’ve traveled internationally and to more regional places like Minnesota and Illinois.

Here are a few of our tips for planning a fun and relaxing couples trip!

Having a car that can fit everyone in is a great perk! Minivans are fun for adult trips, too!

Find an Interesting Location

As you can imagine, getting six or more people to agree on a vacation destination can be tricky! We are always talking/dreaming about places to go (Cuba, Iceland, and Ireland are on our list!), but when we take into account schedules and budgets, we typically end up somewhere regional. Our last two getaways have been

  1. to a lake house in Minnesota for the fall colors, and
  2. to Galena, Illinois, for some summer relaxation.

Consider going “off season” to places to save money. Summer is usually more expensive to travel, and we’ve had a lot of fun in the fall, too! When it comes to making the final decision, majority rules in our group. Lots of compromises have been made over the years, but we always have a great time because whenever you’re with great friends, goods times will be had by all!

Consider Renting a Home

It would be easy to just make hotel reservations, but we’ve found that renting a home provides us with more time together. We use websites like AirBNB or VRBO.com to find homes in the area. This not only saves us money, but it provides us with a common space (living room, game room, yard, etc.) for hanging out and a kitchen for cooking a few meals together as well.

Create a Private Facebook Event

We use a Facebook Event for sharing any updates to our trip, discussing our plans, and making dinner reservations before we go. During our last trip to Galena, one of the ladies made a poll of local activities, and we voted on which ones we’d want to do. One of my favorite parts about traveling with other people is doing things I wouldn’t normally do. For example, this past trip to Galena included a visit to Grant’s Home which is something I would not have chosen to do on my own. It was interesting and I learned a lot! In turn, I loved the Blaum Brothers Distillery Tour which I know some of the others weren’t quite as interested in. We split up for some things as well—some went golfing, some went shopping, etc. Having the discussions on Facebook ahead of time helps everyone give input on what they want to do!

Travel with Fun People!

This seems silly to even mention, but it is so important that you travel with people you really enjoy. Our group is pretty similar in that shorts, T-shirts, and hoodies are the standard attire during the day. We love to be tourists, check out new places, and are comfortable spending time together. (Make sure you are okay wearing your pajamas to breakfast in the kitchen with your travel companions!) We truly enjoy playing games, watching a movie, or drinking beer on a patio together. That doesn’t mean that everything is perfect or that we always agree, but we have a lot of fun together!

I love to travel, and traveling with friends is not only a great way to see the world, but it’s a great way to deepen relationships with the people in your life.

Have you traveled with friends before? If so, where did you go?
