Need More Sleep? Sleep Training a Newborn

Starry Night Sleep Consulting

After more than four months of waking up multiple times a night to feed my newborn, I was tired. Beyond tired, really. I know people whose babies are sleeping through the night at this age, but we were far from it.

The strongest coffee couldn’t compete with my exhaustion. I needed help!

I had read sleep books and I knew that 4 to 5 months was a good time to start sleep training. We had a pretty good nap schedule and the baby could put herself to sleep on her own in her crib. I felt like we were doing all the right things, but we still weren’t sleeping for extended periods at night!

Then I met Lauren Betts with Starry Night Sleep Consulting.

Lauren assured me that nothing was wrong with my baby and that with her help, she (and as a result I) could sleep much better.

One of my favorite things about Lauren is that she is a mom too. She understands how hard it is to function on little to no sleep, and she also understands how important it is for your child to get good sleep!

Lauren spent an hour talking to my husband and I about our baby and our day time and night time routine. Then she created a custom sleep plan for our baby. Our goal was to only be up once a night to feed the baby.

I was nervous about how the first night would go. I knew it would be hard to let the baby cry and not immediately go in and feed her, but I also knew she wasn’t hungry. The first night was the hardest, but my husband and I stuck to the plan and I only fed the baby one time.

For two weeks I emailed Lauren how our nights and naps went, and each day she offered suggestions and encouragement.

By the end of the first week we had several nights when we were only up one time!

Throughout the process Lauren was super encouraging. When we had hard nights and fed the baby more than once, she didn’t make us feel bad about it. She just reminded us of our goal of only being up once a night to feed the baby.

Working with Lauren and the sleep plan she created for our family gave us the support and tools we needed to help our baby start sleeping better at night.

What’s Your Bedtime Story?

Lauren works with every family to tailor a custom sleep plan that works for them. Clients will fill out a detailed intake form that allows her to learn their child’s current sleep schedule and habits, the family’s sleep goals, and any other important information.

Once Lauren receives the intake form, she will set up a phone call/Skype consult so she can get to know the family and learn more about the client’s life and parenting style.

Then, Lauren and the family will decide on a sleep plan tailored to them and a start date to implement the written sleep plan. With a two week consult, clients will be supported every step of the way, leading to better and longer sleep for their little ones.

Whether your child is 2 months old or 2 years old (or older!), Lauren offers a variety of services to help everyone in your family sleep better!

  1. When my daughter turned 7 months I decided it’s the right time for sleep training. I thought it’ll be more than difficult but I saw somebody recommended the HWL method by Susan Urban. I tried it and I won! after 3 days my daughter was able to sleep on her own in her crib!
I found the HWL instructions in “How to teach a baby to fall asleep alone” guide here: http://www.parental-love.com I would not believe it if i didn’t try it myself

    • I’m not familiar with this method, but I’m glad it worked for you!The important thing is that you and baby are sleeping!

  2. I have never heard about the HWL method before as well but I am glad I decided to try it!
Great ebook, great method. Thanks Carolyn for sharing

  3. Girls you were right about this guide – I’ve tried it and I love it! It simply taught my son how to fall asleep on his own without rocking and now he sleeps like an angel in his own crib – how great is that? 🙂

  4. I have tried it and I wanted to share to help other parents: “How to teach a baby to fall asleep alone” guide is great – short with clear instructions and what is the most important it has worked for my daughter! Nice 🙂
