Shop small, shop fashionably in Des Moines

0

I like shopping of all kinds. I like grocery shopping. I like shopping for plants. I like shopping for office supplies. I like shopping for shampoo. I LOVE shopping for clothes. So when Andrea and I had the chance to do a little clothes shopping for our trip to San Antonio, we were ecstatic!

We visited a couple of our favorite Des Moines boutiques for things to wear in San Antonio for City Moms Blog Network annual Sister Site Conference. Our shopping challenges: Moms Night Out dresses, nursing-friendly tops, and layering for a 20 degree temperature swing. Fortunately we were able to find everything we needed and represent Des Moines Moms Blog in San Antonio at Mainstream Boutique Waukee, The Funky Zebras, and The StyleBar Boutique.

Mainstream Boutique Waukee

Mainstream Boutique Waukee is a multi-generational fashion boutique selling unique-on-trend apparel and accessories at an attractive price point.

There were so many cool things at Mainstream Boutique Waukee that I wouldn’t have normally found in a big box store.

Pants are always a tricky thing for me to buy. Here are my musts when buying pants: they must have a bit of stretch, they can’t be miles and miles long (I’m 5’3″ on a good day), and I can’t feel like I poured myself into them (aka not super skinny).

I have been on the search for versatile, olive-colored, neutral pants for what seems like years. I finally found them at Mainstream Boutique! I love them because they fit all of my of my criteria, but my favorite part is the utility zipper on the pocket because of the added textural interest it adds. My Sanctuary olive skinnies pair perfectly with so much and have become one of the hardest working pants I own.

I also nabbed this fabulous Dex floral date-night dress, perfect for fall nights. While hard to see in the below picture, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my black agate slice necklace. It has definitely become a go-to necklace and will be seeing a lot of action in the coming months.

Andrea was on the hunt for some chic-yet-comfortable skinny jeans and casual fall tops. She had heard good things about Mac and Me jeans (a Mainstream exclusive) and they delivered! They are stretchy and soft but not so tight that they look like leggings. And the high-rise fit is a definite plus!

Mainstream has so many tops to choose from in a wide range of styles. The camo shirt is from Z Supply and it has a great, relaxed fit. It’s hard to tell from the picture below, but the dusty mauve shirt is a light-weight, drapey sweater—perfect for nursing and hiding a postpartum tummy!

 The Funky Zebras

Des Moines Moms Blog has a long standing love of The Funky Zebras store in Ankeny. This trip was no different.

When you walk into The Funky Zebras, there’s just so much to choose from: denim, ponchos, sweaters, scarves, leggings, and fun decor! It’s a shopper’s dream!

Andrea nailed her choices with a chic chambray tunic from Mudpie and super soft leggings from Comfy USA. She embellished the ensemble with an elegant diamond-studded pendant on a gold chain and a bracelet trio to complete the look.

Jessica on staff at the Funky Zebras surprised me with these funky Colletta faux-snakeskin patterned leggings that really didn’t seem like an obvious “Kara choice.” But lo and behold, when paired with a gray Le Lis Aztec themed tunic they’re perfect! Add a cute black tassel necklace and gray-white-and black sparkly bead bracelet, and my look was complete. All because of the expert recommendations of Jess!

Whether you’re looking for a cute shirt and scarf for a casual Saturday or you need a trendy ensemble for a night out, you can find what you’re looking for at The StyleBar Boutique.

Andrea and I both were drawn to these long, kimono-style floral dresses. They are super comfortable, yet dressy enough for a night on the town. High-waisted, super flattering and feminine, these Wanna B dresses are begging for a date night!

As you can see, Andrea and I hit the jackpot shopping locally here in Des Moines. While our city might not be considered the fashion capitol of the world, there’s no reason why you can’t look fabulous and still shop local!
