We just returned from a weekend trip to Minnesota to visit our good friends. Road trips, to me, are a great way to refresh and have great conversation with my hubby, but sometimes it doesn’t always seem possible with kids. Especially young kids. We definitely aren’t experts in road trip survival, but here are some ideas that work for us!
10 RULES FOR ROAD TRIP SURVIVAL
10. Movies are a must! Save the “look out the window lecture” for when your kids are older.
9. Load a bag with crayons, markers, paper and coloring books. Maybe splurge on a “color by number” book to really keep them entertained. Ask them to draw something they see in the car or outside.
8. SNACKS. SNACKS. SNACKS! Snacks are not only a cheap distraction but can also be used as bribes to calm down a hysterical child.
7. Lower your expectations. Children are like puppies; they aren’t meant to be kenneled for hours! Stop, let them stretch and run around. (Add an extra half hour or hour to your road time!)
6. Leave at nap time. Need I say more??
5. Be prepared to crawl over the seats like a monkey to grab dropped Loveys, toys, crayons, etc.
4. Give them something to look forward to. I like to get them pumped for a stop for ice cream or fast food!
3. If you are a “neat freak” about your car, get over it. Road trips just tend to be messy.
2. Forewarning: this could be classified as TMI. You may want to have some sort of “car potty” on hand… emergencies do happen! LOL!
1. Have fun. Be goofy. Sing songs. Enjoy each other. Don’t stress. Road trips are FUN!
