My Favorite Essential Oils for Winter + Giveaway

15

My family thought I crossed the line from Mom to crazyย Mom when I initially started talking about essential oils. But all they had to do was try them, and they are convinced.

I first learned about essential oils three years ago from my amazing and resourceful friend Tammy. Since that time, I have admired, researched, and experimented and I rarely go a day without using one or more oils.

Not Just for Hippies:

Historically, these oils have played a significant role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils were used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used forย aromatherapy,ย massage therapy,ย emotional health,ย personal care,ย nutritional supplements,ย household solutions, and much more.

So Many Choices:

While there are several brands of oils out there and there is much debate on what’s ‘best’, I personally use Young Living Oils. ย Not only are they therapeutic-grade, which means thatย “every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect”, it is an amazing company that impacts organizationsย and communitiesย throughout the world. ย I am able to purchase the oils at wholesale prices and get special discounts and perks as an Independent Distributor and that just works for me.

While there are likely a hundred uses for each essential oil, I’ll share our family’s winter favorites and how we use them on a regular basis.

Please know that I am not a doctor, and these statements and uses have not been approved or endorsed by anyone other than the Farnsworth Family.

My favorite oils to have on hand for Winter:

Thieves

it’s my go-to, fix everythingoil. ย we use it daily!

  • eliminate airborne bacteria from areas where we are exposed to germs (the mall, airplane, hotels, play areas)
  • support our immune systems when we’re coming down with something,
  • comfort flu-like symptoms, sore throats, strep throat, earaches, teething and abscessed teeth
  • prevent a sore throat or cold from turning into something more serious.
  • help remove splinters or heal canker or cold sores
  • I disinfect our home with it throughout the year, but especially during winter. Anything that’s been proven toย reduce bacterial cultures by 99.96% has me motivated to clean!

    • @Angela Squires yes! You can! Otherwise, you can always sign up to be an independent distributor and get wholesale prices yourself! To do that, There is a one-time $40 fee for membership, but its totally worth it and you will save that in the discount you get buying regularly. Lets talk about it personally and i can send you the same list I shared with amber!

  1. Hi! This blog post came up when I was searching about oils in Iowa. Could you send me any info you have. My mom is new to it and would love local information.
    Thank you!

  2. Hi. Can you send me info on how to start using the oils. I’m wanting some immediately.
Do I have to attend a class first and when/where are they?
Is there a person who can advise me?
    Thanks!

    • there are several people in the area that are distributors and there are numerous classes held throughout the metro on a regular basis. if you want to provide us with your email via our contact us form (or email us at desmoinesmomsblog(at)gmail(dot)com, i’d be happy to send you some info directly! thanks for your interest!

  3. I am new to oils and recently purchased from doterra. I would love to know more about classes and also is there anywhere in Des Moines that sells essential oils?
I ordered online but if I can just stop in a store after work that would be easier.

  4. Just a quick reminder to do your research if your children or yourself have special medical needs. (I love essential oils but believe you need to be careful.) Thieves which people use extensively and love has two ingridients that can cause seizures in people with epilepsy. These ingridients don’t cause seizures in the general population but can cause seizures in my son. Remember to be conscious before difusing it in your house when you have guests over. Know if any of them have seizures.

I typically will ask friends before coming over to see if they are diffusing any oils and if so I research the ingridents and see if they have ingridients known to cause seizures. If they do, I will often leave my child with seizures at home.

    • Kaci…thanks so much for pointing that out! You’re a great mama for being diligent about inquiring and protecting your son. Oils are physiological (obviously we are all created differently!) and what works for one person doesn’t always work for another but especially health conditions like epilepsy or pregnancy for example we all need to use caution!

    • I definitely recommend oils! there are several Facebook groups and classes throughout the metro offered by many different distributors but my favorite is therootedhome. http://rootedhome.com. Most of what I have learned works for us in different situations is research via the desk reference, talking to others whose oils regularly and trial and error for our family!
