This post is sponsored by Ingrid Williams Real Estate. Ingrid is a wealth of knowledge and can answer your questions on anything from finding the right Realtor to moving strategies to house hunting with kids.
It starts innocently enough. “Hey honey, have you seen this house for sale on Zillow?” Then before you know it you have contacted an agent and are swimming in an ocean of boxes and packing tape, hoping every friend you have will pitch in to help. A few pizzas and beers are worth every bit of moving day help you will receive.
You never knew there were SO many things to prepare for and do — change of address forms, unpacking, hanging blinds, moving pictures a little to the left… no, to the right… enrolling the kids in a new school, etc. Moving is so exhausting and exciting all at the same time.
But, I want to share something that just may be one of the most important to-do’s on the moving list:
A Home Blessing
As a family of faith, there’s a lot more to settling into your home than arranging furniture, unpacking boxes, and meeting new friends. One of my favorite things to do after each of my family’s many moves was to pray blessings over our home.
Every home has a story, and what a better way to start off a new chapter than with a blessing? A house blessing is actually an ancient tradition that is performed in many religions and cultures. And we decided that because faith is an important part of our family’s story, we wanted to invite God to be part of our home. We found it to be a wonderful practice to ask God to protect our home and make it a place of peace as well as a place where His love would be shown to all who enter.
It’s Never too Late
If you have already moved into your home, don’t feel that you missed out if you didn’t ask a blessing over your home. It’s never too late! Here are a few verses my family has used during our house blessings:
2. Be a place of refuge: “It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.” (Isaiah 4:6)
3. Be filled with laughter and joy: “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’” (Psalm 126:2)
4. Be a place where strangers feel welcomed: “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)
Please give feedback and share your own stories of your family’s house blessings in the comments section!
