sacred heart school des moines“Why do you send your kids to a Catholic school?”

It’s a question I’ve been asked many times by friends or even acquaintances as soon as the words, “my kids go to Sacred Heart School,” come out of my mouth.

I usually begin my answer with a story. While sitting in my seventh grade English class, Sister Jean Ann was in the middle of her lesson on Greek mythology at St. John’s Catholic School in Bancroft, Iowa. In this farming community of less than a thousand people, an ambulance siren began blaring through town. Sister paused and told us to put our pencils down and say a prayer as a class for whomever needed that ambulance. We said a Hail Mary and class resumed.

I’ll never forget that day.

Faith is woven into all we do at Sacred Heart School, too. Spiritual lessons and opportunities to put our faith in action aren’t reserved for the daily religion class. Service projects and prayers at the beginning of the school day, before lunch, and at the start of any school assembly are part of the culture. Last year the entire school, nearly 500 students in grades K-8, walked across the parking lot to Sacred Heart Church to pray for a young man whose life on earth was ending. He was an alum, and our close-knit community came together to support his family. That’s just what we do.

While our foundation is spiritual, our school also has a reputation for academic excellence. “Excellence” at Sacred Heart School could mean providing additional support for a student who is struggling academically or providing more challenging work — even skipping a grade level in math — for other students. Our test scores are consistently higher than the national, state, and local school district scores.

We also have a full computer lab, our teachers each have a laptop and iPad, and there are several mobile devices in each classroom.

  1. I love learning about alternatives to public schools. I went to a Catholic high school (even though I am not Catholic) and had a wonderful experience! It challenged and deepened my faith and gave me a better understanding of other Christian denominations.
