Fall Wardrobe Essentials

1

September still felt a lot like summer here in Iowa, most everyone seems ready for apple picking, pumpkin patches, and everything fall. Today I’m rounding up four fall wardrobe workhorses I think you should have in your closet for fall along with a few ideas of how to style them!

First up is the utility jacket. A jacket like this can be worn for actual warmth or just for some style factor. So many stores are carrying these, so you’re bound to find one you like. From military green to fun colors like mustard or blush, having a utility jacket is a must have. You can dress it up for a night out or dress it down to run around with the kids.

A cardigan, like the utility jacket, is another great piece to finish off an outfit. I’m seeing cardigans with fun details like elbow patches and awesome textures and patterns. Again, throw it on for warmth or fashion and you’re set. I love cardigans for a casual look over a basic tee, a fun graphic tee, or even over your sports team t-shirts to dress them up a little.

Plaid flannel shirts aren’t just for the farmers in your life. Plaid is everywhere and it’s another piece you can dress up, dress down, or even layer like a cardigan! Red buffalo plaid is my favorite, but you can find plaid in all different colors to go with just about anything.

Over the past few years, ankle booties have really become popular. You can find them in wedges, heels, or flats, so there is bound to be a style that works for you! I wear my booties with just about everything: dresses, dress pants, and jeans! They keep your toes warm during the cooler months without the bulk of a taller boot.

Here’s how I pulled some of these pieces together to make some great outfits for all different occasions this fall:

I paired a cardigan and my distressed jeans with a graphic tee and some sneakers. This outfit is great for a play date, hanging out with friends, a trip to the farmer’s market! You can mix it up and wear your Iowa or Iowa State tee and have a great tailgating outfit, too!

Here is a utility jacket look which you could wear on your kiddo’s field trip, a family outing to the pumpkin patch, or a trip to the park. Distressed denim adds some fun texture to this outfit and brings out a great casual feel. Throw on a comfortable basic tee and some sneakers and you’re good to go!

As a teacher, this outfit definitely works for me for as something I could wear to school. The ankle booties are comfortable for walking and the utility jacket completes the outfit. This would also be a great outfit to wear to church or a girl’s night out.

I wanted to throw something in a little unexpected. Plaid does not just have to be casual. Add some dark pants or leggings and a statement necklace and you’re ready for a date night! I find it more difficult to dress for date nights in the cooler months because I don’t want to freeze in a dress, so a look like this is a go-to for me. You could even add a lace top extender for a more feminine touch.

What are your must-have pieces for fall? Are you ready for cooler temperatures or are you clinging to summer weather with all you have?
