Where to Eat Donuts in Des Moines

1

I have a love for doughnuts. I believe the addiction… need… appreciation for doughnuts came from my father. He worked funky hours when I was growing up, and sometimes that meant he would arrive home just as we were waking up for the days. I used to not like that he had to work while we slept and then sleep while we were awake. Maybe that’s why he started bringing home doughnuts on those mornings. A sweet, welcomed distraction. Whatever the reason, I learned to love… tolerate the night shift. To this day, whenever I see a box of Casey’s doughnuts on the kitchen counter, it takes me right back to my childhood.

Living in a large city, there are options. You want to go see a movie? Sure, which theater? How about bowling? We have a few different places to go. I mean, we even have options for which Target to check for something. It should come as no surprise that we have doughnut options. I mean, unless you’re Kara, who was very puzzled when I told her about all the different doughnut shops that my kids and I visited over the summer. It all started with our annual “Doughnut Day Buffet” that we have on National Donut Day. The girls and I were discussing where we should get our doughnuts from, and the list of options just kept growing!

And there formed the Doughnut Bucket List of the Summer of 2016: Des Moines Edition.

To spare you all from the shock of options, I decided to give you a nifty list to go off of, should you want to peruse the options of doughnuts in the metro.

4941 Douglas Avenue, Des Moines
Open 5 a.m. – 4 p.m., 7 days a week

Donut Hut is MY favorite place to go for doughnuts. You will not regret trying these. When you go, be sure to try the cherry or the Dutch Crumb. Yummmm…. The staff is always very friendly and patient with my indecisive, deer-in-headlights children. And they have been known to give them a few doughnut holes on the house!

MAHALO’S COFFEE

4800 Mills Civic Parkway #105, West Des Moines

We ended up here after a crazy bee sting drama at the park. My kids were amped up, and we walk into this peaceful, small area. I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I contemplated apologizing and shuffling my kids right back out. But they were so excited to try these doughnuts, and mama needed some coffee! This was the perfect stop. We all agreed on a few flavors (that they make on the spot). They patiently waited and offered suggestions while I read the coffee menu, and they even let my kids take an extra cute little umbrella… or two — which made my son’s day! We will definitely return to Mahalo’s!

West Glen area in West Des Moines
Open 24/7

Okay, so this doughnut shop has not opened yet. BUT! We did have a chance to try the new Hurts Donut while we were in Lincoln this summer. And oh.my.calories. Hubs had a doughnut milkshake. You choose a doughnut, they put all the toppings in a blender with some ice cream and serve it in a cup with the original doughnut on top of your lid! Whoa. Also, this doughnut shop is seriously open 24/7, and they are constantly putting out trays of new flavors. Worth the stop! Again and again and again….

CHUCHU DONUTS

106 SW State Street # 101, Ankeny
Open 5 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday

We heard about this one from a friend at our Doughnut Day Buffet. Guys, you choose your long john, and they give you a choice of fillings. Then, they fill it right there! My kids loved that. Also, when I tell you about my kids’ experience at each place, keep in mind that Drake ordered a bwaze (glazed) doughnut… every time! He was never disappointed. ChuChu was my oldest’s favorite — she loves a good long john!
