Dating in Des Moines: Valentine’s Day Edition

0

We live in a great city, full of romance and possibility–there’s no excuse to be going on the same old date week after week or month after month. This is the Valentine’s edition, because there is at least one heart-shaped thing involved.

Here are four ideas for ditching the date night rut in Des Moines:

1. Skywalk Scavenger Hunt

Wind your way through Downtown’s maze in the sky. Try clues like “Eventually, we’ll get there” or “Rustier than your grandpa’s pickup.” The end destination could mean something special to you as a couple or it could just be a romantic place to eat (Django, anyone?), go ice skating (Brenton Skating Plaza), or play video games (Up Down–but this involves a hike across the river, no luxurious glass walls included). Dereck and I got married in the Liberty Building, which is now the Hyatt Place. You get the idea. This is a great option for the mate who likes to be active.

2. Milk Shakes + Podcast

And here’s a better option for those who, like me, prefer to sit quietly and eat sweets. Visit your favorite ice cream spot and find a place to listen to your favorite podcast, musician, book on tape, you name it depending on your degree of nerdiness. I could really go for a Zombie Burger wedding cake shake right now. Live on the edge and make it the adult version!

3. Big Breakfast + Brass Armadillo

Switch it up and spend some time together at the beginning of the day. Visit your favorite breakfast joint (maybe Waveland Cafe? or Drake Diner?), order the normally-forbidden side of biscuits and gravy, then head over to an antique store like Brass Armadillo and get lost looking at trinkets together.

4. Heart-Shaped Pizza + Board Game

If you find yourself with no babysitter in sight, try to enjoy an evening in your own home. Shut your phones off, bake a heart-shaped pizza with the kids, put them to bed as early as possible, pray it doesn’t backfire, and then break out that dusty adult board game and let each other win. Have you ever played Othello? Dereck and I played this almost daily when we just got married and didn’t have kids or jobs to speak of. He always wins.
