Connecting People with Food: New Family Farm

7

To me, summer screams fresh produce. LOUDLY! Farmers’ markets, gardens, plants in pots on my deck. We love eating fresh as much as possible – it tastes better, and as hard as it can be to get our kids to eat vegetables, taste is really important! The best possible solution would be to grow it ourselves. Unfortunately, we have not been able to put a garden in at our new house yet. And while I absolutely love the farmers’ markets in the area, busy schedules prevent making weekly visits. That is why I was super excited to learn about New Family Farm.

vegetable_ShareNew Family Farm is a family-owned CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) that delivers farm fresh, chemical-free produce to your table. Each week we receive a variety of items ranging from potatoes and zucchini to lettuce and leafy greens. The bonus for me is that New Family Farm provides us with produce that we would not normally pick up at a farmers’ market or the grocery store. The weekly newsletter shares recipe suggestions, and storage tips help guide us through how to handle anything we are unsure of.

With the CSA you do pay up front. This was a scary part for me. If there was bad weather or something happened at the farm there might not be any produce. However, this helps support our farmer throughout the season. We feel good about the CSA model because we are making a commitment to a farm that really cares about environmental stewardship as well as our health!

The summer season ran for sixteen weeks. At roughly $30 per week, each share was packed and definitely worth the cost. For an extra $4 a week we receive a loaf of fresh-baked homemade bread.

Tony_planter_rowsAnother reason why I love New Family Farm is their dedication not only to improving lifestyle, but also to improving the land and “addressing society’s sustainability challenges.” Tony Thompson, owner of New Family Farm, grew up on the farm and holds degrees in sustainability and product innovation. I am very excited about the vision that Tony has for the farm and what this will bring to our area – not only by growing healthy food, but also by creating jobs and supporting the local economy. The farm’s tagline is “Connecting People with Food,” and that is exactly what they do.

Planter_rows2After visiting the farm, I really got a better feel for what that tagline means. Knowing where my food comes from is important, and knowing that it is right here in the metro makes it even better. We are looking forward to the fall season starting the end of September!

The fall season will run September 29 through the week of Thanksgiving. Deliveries will take place every other week. The baskets will contain lots of what we have seen in the summer season as well as fall staples such as potatoes, onions, and winter squash.

Here is the exciting part of my post!!

New Family Farm is hosting a giveaway for our readers. One lucky reader will win a basket the first week of the fall season (valued at $37). Enter below.

If you would like to have a chance to visit the farm as well as four other farms in the area, New Family Farm will be part of the Farm Cruise taking place September 13. For more information, check out www.farmcruise.com.

  1. I love this concept of farming. I am new to the area and will totally keep this in mind for next summer! 🙂 Thank you for sharing

  2. I don’t know what “offspring” is either. I’ve always been interested in doing a half share of a CSA, but my husband thinks since we have our own garden that it wouldn’t really be a prudent use of our money. But such a fun idea anyway!

  3. Love this post, Ashley! Thank you. We’ve been interested in CSAs and buying direct from local farmers but it’s hard to know where to start. This would be amazing! (And I don’t know what offspring is either, unless you mean the three tiny humans we created. Then yes I have them and “use” them daily.)
