Ben’s Favorite Things: A Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father’s Day is coming up, and the dads are taking over! Stay tuned all week as we hear from several awesome local dads, and be blessed by these glimpses into the mind and heart of a father.

Move over, Oprah – I’ve got some favorite things to share.

I was asked to contribute to Des Moines Moms Blog, as they are “turning it over” to the dads this week. I am sincerely honored and would like to use my 15 minutes of fame to share with you some of my favorite things (just in case you still have some Father’s Day shopping to do).

Taking My Son to the Movies

What’s better than watching a movie on a humongous screen with Dolby Digital whatever surround sound in a nice soft chair with a huge bucket of hot, buttered popcorn and an ice cold pop? Experiencing all that with someone who enjoys it as much as you do! I’ve always loved going to the movie theater, but when the kids were really little I missed out on quite a few. Now that Drake is old enough to sit through an entire movie, he’s my favorite companion. Pick up some movie theater gift cards and tell that special dad in your life to go crazy!

Date Night

Looking for a special pre-Father’s Day surprise? My four favorite words are “I found a babysitter.” I’m kidding – my kids are great, but sometimes you just need some adult time. It is so nice to go out to eat at a grown-up place, have grown-up conversations, eat grown-up food, and drink grown-up… ummm… booze. Some of my top places to go on date night are Myabi 9 for sushi, El Patio for delicious Mexican and beautiful outdoor seating, and a local brewery like 515 or Confluence.

Beer

Speaking of breweries… what Favorite Things list would be complete without beer? None I’d be associated with, I’ll tell you that much. I probably could have made this post about nothing but beer. Want a perfect gift and you are really short on time? Grab a six pack of a microbrew and be the Supermom/wife you know you are. Hoppy, or bitter, beers are pretty popular now. They are a great alternative to the fruity, shandy type beers on a hot day. My pick would be Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale. If he’s not into hops, go with a Rogue Dead Guy Ale. It might be the best beer ever made.
