We Love Altoona: A Guide to Des Moines Area Neighborhoods

0

Altoona is located on the very eastern edge of Des Moines, right along I-80 east. When people think of Altoona they often think of Adventureland, Bass Pro Shop, the new outlet mall coming this fall, and Prairie Meadows Casino. If you venture into town a little further, you will discover a bustling community full of local businesses, job opportunities, a wonderful school system, and endless recreational options.

What is your favorite part about raising your kids here?

My favorite part of raising kids in Altoona is the small town feel. I love knowing my kids are safe to ride their bikes up and down the street and walk to school. Altoona really does feel like a place where people watch out for each other.

What makes Altoona family friendly?

Altoona is built for families! Ride your bike on one of the many trails to the aquatic center for an afternoon swim. Head to the library where you are sure to find a fun program going on. Looking to get active? The Altoona Campus fitness and community center has an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, and fitness programs for the whole family. Altoona is also home to many fun parks! Make sure and check out the Pirate Park for a park experience unlike any other.

What events or traditions does your community have?

My favorite tradition in Altoona is the Homecoming Parade each fall. I love seeing the streets lined with people I know all coming together to watch the parade, catch some candy, and cheer on the Rams. Each August, Altoona hosts Altoona Palooza, a town festival that features activities, competitions, and food! The summer is filled with live music and fun for the whole family at Music in the Plaza.

Why would you recommend it for other families?

Altoona is a great place to raise a family. It feels like a small town, but has conveniences of being located close to a big city. The school district is fantastic, the people are friendly, and it is a place that quickly feels like home.

What makes Altoona unique?

Our neighborhood has a community feel. Need a cup of sugar? Ask the neighbor. Need someone to watch your kids while you run to the doctor? Shoot your friend across the street a text. There is something special about doing life with people who you can count on, and our neighborhood is just that!

What are some of your favorite local businesses, stores, or restaurants?

Vine and Willow

My absolute favorite business is Vine and Willow, a home décor store that has all things farmhouse, vintage, and cute!

Spectators

We love to take the kids to eat at Spectators, a sports bar located in Adventurland Inn. The food is great, the service is fast, and they give kids tablets to play games on while you wait for your food to come.

The Sugar Shack

This is a family favorite! The Sugar Shack has wonderful burgers, fries, and the very best milkshakes around, all served with a friendly smile!
