5 Ways to Treat Yourself this Holiday Season

Let’s be honest moms, we pretty much do it all this time of the year, don’t we?

I know every family does what works best for them in terms of holiday task distribution, but I think it’s safe to say the bulk of the cooking, cleaning, present buying, travel preparation, cookie making, decorating, and gift wrapping falls squarely on our shoulders.

You want to know the truth though? I wouldn’t have it any other way. I kind of love all the tasks that come with the holidays. But the extra work can be overwhelming at the same time. I want to love Christmas, and I don’t want to be a big old grinch.

So I’m planning to balance the extra holiday workload by treating myself along the way. Here are some of the ways I’m going to pamper myself while I’m pulling off a fun, festive, and family-filled holiday for the loved ones in my life.

This year I’m going to….

Treat Yourself During the Holidays

Get a bright manicure!

It will be more fun to wrap gifts for hours with a fun color on my nails. Some fun winter trends I’m seeing are olive green, dark brown, metallics, deep purple, mustard yellow, and animal prints.

Upgrade my sock stash.

In the midwest, it’s pretty common to be asked to remove your shoes at home-based holiday gatherings. I’m going to do myself a favor and show off some festive socks at my next get-together. I’m loving the fact that we can let our socks peep out of our booties this year, so I plan to grab a package of tall socks that will look great with or without shoes.

Buy something I would normally make from scratch.

I’m happy to host friends and family this holiday season. I’m not the world’s best cook and the truth is, nobody expects me to be. It’s a pressure that I put on myself. So this year I’m going to order a few breakfast pizzas from Casey’s instead of stressing over breakfast dishes.

Make shopping fun.

I’ve already had a chance to shop with some of my favorite girlfriends and my mom and I hit a few sales on Black Friday. My kids came with me when shopping for grandparents, and I took my husband on a fun date instead of stressing over a gift for him. This year, I will remember the time spent with family and friends, not fighting crowds and finding perfect presents.

Order my own gift, and wrap it too!

I like shopping far more than my husband does, so we are both happy when I pick out and order my own gift. Typically, I just put it to use when it arrives. This year, however, I’m going to wrap my gift and put it under the tree. Turns out, I like unwrapping gifts on Christmas morning too! It will be good for me to practice some patience this year.

Of course, Christmas isn’t really about money and things. There are some completely free and freeing ways I plan to treat myself this year. I’m also going to…

Cross something off my to-do list and just not do it.

Then I’m going to remember to make no apologies about why it didn’t get done. Chances are nobody will even notice.

Continue to practice self-care.

Instead of completely abandoning my work-out routine and eating all the calories, I’m going to focus on balance and do what makes me feel good. I’m not going to feel guilty about eating a cookie (or three) but I’m also going to try to drink plenty of water, prioritize walks and trips to my fitness studio, and I’m going to try to get plenty of sleep.

Focus on the reason I celebrate.

I’m looking forward to our Christmas Eve service, and I am going to spend time everyday reading and learning with my family through our advent devotional.

Choose joy.

Christmas is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be joyful. If I’m letting the stress and work of the holidays get in the way of the wonder and beauty of this time of year, I’m going to remember that I’m the only one who can change my attitude. I’m going to try to focus on the good and the real purpose. I’m going to treat myself and my family by keeping my attitude in check.
